Content and QoS Policies in Multi-domain Heterogeneous Mobile Systems

This paper discusses the model for setting channel and adaptation policies in multi-domain heterogeneous mobile systems, focusing on inter-domain roaming. It covers topics such as broadcast applications, administrative and technology domains, and the infrastructure model. Ongoing and future work includes fine-tuning the model and implementing a discovery protocol.

  1. Content and QoS Policies in Multi-domain Heterogeneous Mobile Systems Cristian Hesselman <hesselman@telin.nl>

  2. Setting • Broadcast applications • E.g., TV channels, e-learning • Heterogeneous environment • Various wireless network techs, mobile hosts, administative authorities • Related to AAA(ARCH), but no such perspective as yet • I’m going to discuss the model I’m using

  3. Channels ID = source + content Diff channels For course-grained classes of receivers Quality levels Perceptual Streams Encoders + packetizers Content Model

  4. Administrative domains Technology domains Servers Clients App-level gateways Infrastructure Model

  5. To allow domain admins to manage their typically scarce wireless resources Channel policies Adaptation policies Focus on inter-domain roaming Example: client 5 Policies

  6. Ongoing and Future Work • Fine-tune model • E.g., explicitely include the notion of a channel end point • Implement a ‘discovery’ protocol • Discover available channels and quality levels • For inter-domain roaming • Maybe based on existing protocols (e.g., SLP) • Incrementally add complexity • Ongoing
