  1. MISSION OPERATIONS DIRECTORATE OPERATIONS DIVISION Assembly and Checkout Officer (ACO) to Payload Operations Integration Center (POIC) handover plan for AMS-02 DO5/Anne Vaughan July 15, 2004

  2. Outline • JSC MCC-H Position Descriptions • MSFC Payload Operations Integration Center (POIC) Position Descriptions • Current Responsibilities Agreement • Pre-Flight Coordination • Joint Mission • Backup Charts

  3. MCC-H Position: Assembly and Checkout Officer (ACO) Responsibilities • ACO is responsible for coordinating the real-time execution of assembly, activation, and checkout operations for ISS elements • ACO is the MCC-H position responsible for all payloads that fly on the shuttle during an assembly flight. • ACO provides an integration interface between the STS and ISS Flight Control Teams (FCT). • ACO is responsible for transfer operations • ACO evaluates the effect of off-nominal conditions on assembly operations and payloads.

  4. MCC-H Position: Payload Officer (PLO) Responsibilities • For dedicated payload flights, the Payload Officer (PLO) is the real-time interface between the POCC and the STS FCT. • As such, the PLO is the integrator and orchestrator for pre-flight and real-time operations. • The PLO is a representative for both the SSP and the payload customer • The PLO’s job is to actively integrate the orbiter and the payload. • The PLO has the unique position of having knowledge in Orbiter and payload systems to help weigh options and make recommendations effectively. • The ACO performs PLO duties during an ISS Mission

  5. POIC Position: Payload Operations Director (POD) Responsibilities • POD is the Payload Operations Integration Center (POIC) position responsible for all ISS Payloads • POD directs the activities of the POIC Cadre • POD coordinates with the ISS Flight Director for payload operations on the ISS • POD coordinates with the ACO for payload operations on the Shuttle • POD delegates Shuttle payload coordination to the Shuttle Operations Coordinator (SOC) except for critical activities • SOC monitors payload operations in Shuttle and coordinates within the POIC and with Payload Developers

  6. Pre-Flight Coordination • The ACO team is responsible for SSP product development and coordination with the AMS-02 team and coordination of operations involving installation (physical mating and power application) of AMS-02 on ISS. • The Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) Payload Operations Director (POD) is responsible for ACOP operations. • ACOP will launch before AMS-02 and will be checked out by the POIC team • The ACO and POD will actively keep each other informed about their perspective operations.

  7. Joint Mission • Handover from ACO to POD occurs after AMS-02 powerup on ISS • The ACO team is responsible for AMS-02 through the transfer and powerup on ISS: • Includes UMA mate, RPC closure to apply power to AMS, and SSRMS ungrapple. • POD is responsible for AMS-02 post powerup on ISS: • Includes ~48 hours of checkout operations, including magnet charging, prior to starting experiment operations. • AMS POD will provide a Go/No Go to stay on ISS based on Checkout. • The ACO and POD will keep each other actively informed about their perspective operations. • POD will be responsible for ACOP

  8. Backup Charts

  9. AMS Contingency Return • If AMS-02 is to be returned, handover from POD to ACO occurs after AMS-02 has been powered down to keepalive power on ISS • POD will coordinate powerdown of AMS-02 experiment with AMS POD • ACO will coordinate operations related to transfer of AMS-02 back to STS, including SSRMS/SRMS and UMA operations with MCC-H FCT and AMS POD • The ACO and POD will keep each other actively informed about their perspective operations.
