  7. Now that you are ‘in Christ’, it is expected that you will do the ‘good works’ you were created for (Eph 2:10). This is the development part of the process of salvation. When you are given eternal life by Christ when he returns, this is when you receive the spiritual body that is immortal and incorruptible. This is the final step in the process of salvation. Baptism is an act of obedience (not a work) in response to a clear command. It is also an act of faith: your sins are ‘washed away’ and your are now ‘in Christ’. It is the new birth, the public start of the process of salvation. Start

Application: This oneness with God and Jesus is dependent on ‘having and keeping God’s commandments’ (v.21) = because we are thinking and doing what God and Jesus think and do, they are effectively in and directing our lives. John 14:18-23 Emp -2 18 "I will not leave you desolate; I will come to you.19 Yet a little while, and the world will see me no more, but you will see me; because I live, you will live also. 20 In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you.21 He who has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me; and he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him." 22 Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, "Lord, how is it that you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world?" 23 Jesus answered him, "If a man loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. …. Points: • “I will come” refers to after Jesus has been resurrected. • “I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you” = the indwelling • “make our home” = abiding, total togetherness (cf. Jn 17:21-22)

Application: The principle of forgiving/condemning based on Bible teaching carries over to church discipline (Matt 18:19-20, cf. 1Cor 5:3-5) John 20:21-23 Emp -3 21 Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you." 22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained." Points: • “breathed on them” = alludes to the forming of Adam (Gen 2:7), and points to the start of a‘new creation’,the church (cf.Col 1:18). • This authority to forgive sins had been promised earlier to the apostles (Matt 16:19). Peter used this Holy Spirit guidance to expose and condemn the lying behavior of Ananias & Sapphira over property sold & proceeds given to the church (Acts 5:1-11)

Application: The fact that uneducated Galileans (v.7, 4:13) were now speaking in the native language of Parthians and Medes etc., was obviously a miracle, evidence of the power of a risen Jesus (v.33) Acts 2:2-4,33 Emp -4 2 And suddenly a sound came from heaven like the rush of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. 3 And there appeared to them tongues as of fire, distributed and resting on each one of them. 4And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. Points: • Fulfilled the statement of Jesus in Mark 16:17 {“they will speak in new tongues”} and also OT prophecy {“I will pour out my Spirit, and they shall prophesy” v. 18, cf. Joel 2:28-32} • “tongues” = foreign languages (cf. vv. 6-9; different Gk word) • alludes to God coming down to Sinai [Ex 19] + undoes Babel [Gen 11]

  15. Application: Those who were “cut to the heart” (convicted by the message) were told: Repent and be baptized …in the name of Jesus …(Acts 2:37-38). Hebrews 6:4-5 Emp -5 4For it is impossible to restore again to repentance those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, and have become partakers of the Holy Spirit, 5and have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come… Points: • The twelve apostles had enjoyed the power to preach the word and to heal the sick (cf. Luke 9:1-6), but it was only a ‘taste’ andwas not always given (cf. v. 40, could not heal the epileptic boy) • Jesus was “a man attested to you by God with mighty works & wonders & signs which God did through him in your midst” (Acts 2:22) in order to authenticate the message, and now the apostles were manifesting the same divine powerfor the same purpose.

  16. Application: But it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has commissioned us; he has put his seal upon us and given us his Spiritin our heartsas a guarantee (2Cor 1:21-22). Ephesians 1:13-14 Emp -6 13 In him you also, who have heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and have believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, 14which is the guarantee of our inheritanceuntil we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory. Points: • The progression is clear: we have (in some form) the Holy Spirit • now, in this life, as a pledge of a future possession yet to happen. • “guarantee” = earnest money(Gk.Arrhabon), down-payment, token • “sealed” = marked out (Gk. Sphragizo); cf. servants of God sealed • on their foreheads, for distinction and protection (Rev 7:3)

  17. Application: While we don’t know the exact mechanics of how the Spirit works (cf. Jn 3:6-8), we can understand the purpose and see the results. Ephesians 3:16-20 Emp -7 16 that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strength-ened with might through his Spirit in the inner man, 17 and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18may have power to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, 19 and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fulness of God. 20 Now to him who by the power at work within us is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, Points: • “in the inner man”=“in your hearts” =“within us”(cf. 2Cor 4:16) • “strengthened with might” = “power to comprehend” = “ toknow the love of Christ” = all the fullness of God” = “the power at work”, and more than we can ever imagine!

  18. Application: The “suffering” that is the environment for spiritual growth, must comefirst, before the glory takes place (cf. Phil 3:8-10, 1Pet 1:11); believers regard this as “a slight, momentary affliction, preparing for us an eternal weight of glorybeyond all comparison” (2Cor 4:17) Romans 5:3-5 Emp -8 3 More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4 and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, 5 and hope does not disappoint us, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit which has been given to us Points: • Context: we are justified by faith, have peace with God (v.1) obtained access to grace, rejoice in hope of sharing the glory of God (v.2) = solid basis to enable believer to ‘suffer’ & ‘grow’ • “into our hearts” = not some mystical experience, but fully appreciating[grasp with the mind] what God has done in Christ

Application: We are not only reactive/defensive in this battle; the whole armor of God includes the “sword of the Sprit” for proactive attack (Eph 6:17) Galatians 5:16-17 Emp -9 16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and do not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh; for these are opposed to each other, to prevent you from doing what you would. Points: • We are given the Spirit to fight against and to overcome the flesh, i.e. , our selfish desires; your natural ‘self’ is the #1 enemy to recognize and to resist; it is an ongoing battle. • The weapons of this spiritual warfare include: purity, knowledge, forbearance, kindness, the Holy Spirit, genuine love, truthful speech, and the power of God; with the weapons of righteousness for the right hand and for the left. (2Cor 6:6-7, cf 4:2)

Application: And the Lord said to Paul one night in a vision, "Do not be afraid, but speak and do not be silent; for I am with you, and no man shall attack you to harm you… (Acts 18:9-10) Matthew 28:19-20 Emp-10 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age." Points: • Along with the difficultly of the task, Jesus gives his disciples the assurance of both power and his personal presence. • Jesus is there with the persecuted believer, even though he/she • “dies in faith” (cf. Rev 2:13,6:9-11,13:10,14:12, Heb 11: 35-37)

  21. Application: Jesus called upon 5 of the 7 churches to repent! For two, he laid no further burden upon them. For all 7, he exhorted to be ‘overcomers’or ‘conquerors’, since they were to rule with him in the Kingdom of God. Revelation 2:1-2 Emp -11 1 "To the angel of the church in Ephesus write: 'The words of him who holds the seven stars in his right hand, who walks among the seven golden lampstands. 2 I know your works… Points: • “lampstands” = “churches” (1:20), i.e, congregations of believers; to “walk among” = to be on site, in their midst. • “I know your works” = Jesus is very aware on what is going on, • both in terms of activity and the motivation behind it; he said something comparable to each of the seven churches (Gk. ecclesias)

  23. So What? Emp-13 The miracles of healing and feeding brought the crowds, but Jesus made it clear that it was the message of God that was the most important (cf. John 6:26-29) The seventy were told not to rejoice over the use of Holy Spirit powers, but “that your names are written in heaven” (Luke 9:20) i.e., they had a covenant with the God of heaven, and were campaigning for His Kingdom. We are empowered to fight a spiritual war:For though we live in the world we are not carrying on a worldly war, for the weapons of our warfare are not worldly but have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments and every proud obstacle to the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ… (2Cor 10:3-5)

  24. Quiz Jesus assured the apostles that he and ___ ________ would come and abide with them. (1 Corinthians 13:1 NIV) • "Even in the case of lifeless things that make sounds, such as the flute or harp, how will anyone know what tune is being played unless there is a distinction in the notes? Again, if the trumpet does not sound a clear call, who will get ready for battle?" (14:7-8 NIV) And reminiscent of pagan worship? • "And when you pray, do not keep babbling like the pagans" (Matthew 6:7 NIV, cf 1Kings 18:25-29) • when you were pagans, somehow or other you were led astray to mute idols (1Cor 12:2)

  44. 8 of 10 Supplemental Reference Material #8h Did tongues die out? • Paul said that genuine tongues would disappear: "Love never fails, but where there are prophecies they will cease; where there are tongues they will be stilled" (1 Corinthians 13:8 NIV) {“cease” – RSV} • In the New Testament the gifts were passed on only by the laying on of hands (Acts 8:17,19:6), but this ability itself was not passed on (Acts 8:19).So when the apostles died there was no-one to pass on the gifts of the Spirit, and eventually those who had received the gift from the apostles died too. In this way the gift of tongues died out.

If there is no interpreter, the speaker should keep quiet in the church and speak to himself and God" (1 Corinthians 14:27-28 NIV) Paul’s four guidelines for tongues state that: 1 - The wordsmust be intelligible(14:9,19) 2 -Maximumof 2 or 3 only may speak (14:27) 3 - They must speakone at a time(14:27) 4 - Theremust be a translator(14:28)

(1Cor.14:39) This instruction was probably based on the following : • Genuine tongues speakers(“I speak in tongues more than all of you” 1Cor.14:18, but see Acts 14:12) • Minority languages(ethnic / caste divisions) • Concession to private emotional expression(as “with groans that words cannot express” Romans 8:26) • The concession does not negate Paul’s 4 guidelines: • “But everything must be done in a fitting and orderly way." (14:40)
