  1. What is a system? 4th Grade introduction to systems

  2. This is a system that has been designed for efficient transport of clothes and other personal items while traveling. What would you call a system like this?

  3. Focus Question: • How can you identify a system? • A system has lots of parts that work together to serve a purpose. If one part breaks, the system may fail or it might continue working, but not as well as before.

  4. What are the interacting parts that make up the luggage system? • Handles for lifting • Storage compartment • Pockets/straps • Zipper • Wheels • Extension handle • Luggage tag/ID

  5. What other systems do we know? • Railroads-a system designed to transport people and heavy goods and products • What are some important parts that define this system?

  6. Subsystems • Some parts of a system are complex enough to be their own systems. Example: The locomotive that pulls the train is its own system including diesel engines, generators, electric motors, wheels, lights, whistles, and a throttle to adjust speed. Subsystem: a system that is part of a larger system

  7. Link to our future lessons • We will investigate various systems in plants and animals that function to support survival, growth, behavior and reproduction. • We will explore systems of transport within animals that function to allow animals to receive, process and respond to information.
