Supplying the Allies • America entering the war immediately helped the Allies who were struggling with high death counts, low war supplies, and little food. • America used convoys of naval ships to protect merchant ships carrying supplies to Britain and France. They found and destroyed German U-Boats.
Russia Withdraws from War! • A revolution breaks out in Russia. The Bolsheviks (Communists) overthrow the democratic govt. • Vladimir Lenin- leader of the Bolsheviks wanted Russia out of the war so he could focus on est. a Communist state in Russia. • Treaty of Brest-Litovsk signed btw Germany and Russia. Russia gives Germany Poland, the Ukraine, and other territories. • Germany was able to move their troops from the Eastern front (Line of battle) to the Western front bordering France.
There had been a stalemate on the Western front but now w/ the strong German Offensive of troops, it looks like Germany may win the war. • American troops arrive and turn the course of the war. • General John J. Pershing leads the American Expeditionary Force in Europe. • The AEF helped the Allies win battles of Chateau- Thierry, Belleau Wood, & Verdun.
Battle of Argonne Forest • America sends 1 MILLION troops • Lasts 7 weeks. • Allies are able to push the Germans out of France and back into Germany! Germany was now faced with an Allied invasion of their country. • Germany soon realizes they can’t win. Troops retreating, shortage of food, and supplies. • They ask for an armistice- agreement to end fighting. (Oct. 1918)
Agreement to end war • Germany must accept Wilson’s (US) plan for peace. • Germany cannot renew hostilities. • Germany must withdraw all troops from Belgium and France. • Wilson will only talk w/ civilians not military leaders • Wilhelm II- German kaiser(emperor) gives up his throne and agrees to Wilson’s terms. • Armistice begins November 11, 1918. (Armistice Day later becomes Veterans Day!)
