WHO were the Sumerians?
  • The name “Sumer” means “land of the civilised people”
  • This word came from a neighbouring culture – the Sumerians only called themselves the “black-headed people”
  • The Sumerians migrated into the fertile Mesopotamian area – but their origins are a mystery

  • Around 3500 BC, the Sumerian people settled in Mesopotamia
  • The first known King recorded in Sumerian history was named Etana, described as `he who stabilized all the lands’
  • Sumerian cities each had rulers who competed for power in the area e.g. Uruk, Ur, Eridu, Nippur

The End of Sumerian Civilisation
  • In 2334 BC, Sumer was conquered by the Akkadian Empire
  • From 2047-1750 BC Sumerian culture was revived in the city of Ur – a final period of greatness
  • Great works of literature and law were written
  • 1750 BC – Ur is destroyed by the Amorites. The land was also no longer fertile
  • The Sumerians migrated away and ceased to exist as a culture
