  1. Poetry Project

  2. Overview: • For this project you will work to compile a collection of poetry of all kinds. • Although I am asking you to collect poems, that does NOT mean you will not have to write your own poetry. • At the end of the unit we will have a poetry reading where everyone will share something from their collection. • You will have to compile your project into a book and have it bound together. • Since this project is being done on your own, you will need to make sure you are keeping track of your deadlines and leave enough time to bind your book. • There will be NO LATE projects accepted.

  3. Part One: • You will need to have a cover page as well as a back cover with an author biography. • This collection should reflect your life, views, and feelings. Poetry has to have meaning and so does your project! • Don’t be afraid to put yourself into your project 

  4. Cover Page: • I’m not going to limit your options, but your cover page should be • Colorful • Eye-catching • A reflection of you • It should include: • Your name • Date • Name of your class

  5. Back Cover: • Your back cover should include: • A photo of you • At least one paragraph describing you as the author of this collection. • If you are having trouble with this, take a look at other book covers.

  6. Your book will be divided into three sections: Author Bio Favorite Poems Personal Writings When it’s finished your book will need to be neatly printed, bound, and organized to receive all the points. Your book should have a cover page for each section. What you choose to make that cover page look like and what your titles are is up to you… AGAIN…the purpose of this project is for me to see the meaning of poetry to YOU! Layout of the Book:

  7. Section One: Poet Bio • You will pick a Poet and write a one to two page biography of that poet, including two of the poets famous works.

  8. You will need to collect 20 of your favorite poems. Each of the poems will need to come from a specific type of poem we are learning about…. In other words, NO you cannot collect 20 Haiku’s and expect to get full credit. You will need to collect the following: 5 Lyric Poems 5 Free Verse Poems 3 Ballads 2 Sonnets 3 Catalogues 2 Haikus These poems can be collected from any source you choose, but I would suggest varying your sources to get a better collection of poems. Section Two: Favorite Poems

  9. For this section you will need to collect 20 of your personally written poems. Just like in the second section, each personally written poem will come from a different type of poetry we cover in class. All 20 cannot be haikus!! You will need to collect the following: 3 Lyric Poems 2 Haikus 3 Sonnets 2 Ballads 3 Free Verse Poems 2 Spoken Word Poems 5 Poems of your choice. Section Three: Personal Writings

  10. Important Side Notes: • As you are putting together this project, you should have a variety of not only types of poems, but also subject matter. • A whole collection about sports, depression, or happiness is not fun to do or for me to grade!!

  11. Important Side Notes: • Although you are going to be on your own for this project, don’t forget that I am here to help ANY time you need it! • If you do find yourself needing my help, make sure you ASK! I can’t read minds so you have to tell me if you are struggling!
