  6. The four divisions of the Corinthian Church • I follow Paul – 180 miles away and writing to address the issue • I follow Christ – Having been crucified about 20 years earlier, Jesus was not present at Corinth – But, it's a claim for a higher Authority! • I follow Apollos - 1Cor 3:6 : I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God made it grow. • I follow Cephas -The Apostle Peter was at Corinth at this time

  7. Paul reminds them that they are: "...the church of God in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus and called holy, together with all those everywhere who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ--their Lord and ours" 1 Cor 1 v2

  8. Dare we read: "... the church of God in Ipswich, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus and called holy, …”

  9. Paul addresses the issue • He doesn't gossip about it (Not even "...just for prayer..."!) • He doesn't ignore it, • He doesn't say it doesn't matter • He doesn't say nothing can be done, • BUT, He Does Do what he can. He can't go to them, but can write to them, and he does.

  10. "I appeal to you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another so that there may be no divisions among you and that you may be perfectly united in mind and thought". V10

  11. "My brothers, some from Chloe's household have informed me that there are quarrels among you. What I mean is this: One of you says, "I follow Paul"; another, "I follow Apollos"; another, "I follow Cephas"; still another, "I follow Christ." (1 Cor 1 vv11-12)

  12. " Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Were you baptized into the name of Paul? "

  20. , "... Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. ..." Mt 6 V12 NIV. " For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins. " Mt 6 V14-15 NIV

  21. How many people did you spot in there, being a ‘Chloe’? (Each doing something small, but important.) • One person suggested an intermediary. • Someone else agreed to be that intermediary. • And with the prayers of many

  22. "I am thankful that I did not baptize any of you except Crispus and Gaius, so no one can say that you were baptized into my name. (Yes, I also baptized the household of Stephanas; beyond that, I don't remember if I baptized anyone else.)" - 1 Cor 1 vv 14-16

  23. "For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel--not with words of human wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power". – 1 Cor 1 v17 1Cor 3:6 "I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God made it grow."

  24. In Conclusion We have looked at: • Who we are – "... the church of God in Ipswich, ... sanctified in Christ Jesus and called holy, " • What we should do – What we can, but we don't Gossip • Remember Chloe – Did what she could

  25. In Conclusion • Prayer is Listening to God as well as Talking to him • We need to be 'Right with God', and have His understanding • We need to agree on the big issues • What we see, may be different from other people – We may need to work to reach Agreement • Baptism is Important, but not as important as salvation
