  3. EIG • Starting point for • SIG • Conference • New Technical Activity for ACM • Several groups have inquired

  4. SGB Directive to SGB EC (March 2016) In March of 2016, the SGB voted to establish Emerging Interest Groups with the following expectations: • Proposals for EIGs will be announced to all SIGs. Emerging Interest Groups will only be established after consultation with related SIGs. • Emerging Interest Groups shall be established with a definitive term that is renewable. • Operational rules be established by the SGB EC.

  5. Rationale • Lightweight structure • Come in and out easily • Chartered under SGB • Will be known as: • ACM Emerging Interest Group on X

  6. Process SGB EC Development Advisor and Director of SIG Services receive proposals Discuss with SGB EC Announce to SGB Consult with overlapping SIG leaders SGB EC approves/disapproves based on input

  7. Starting an EIG • Submit request outlining Interest Area • Include what is currently available to community • Consider current SIGs and why EIG is needed • Provide • list of activities • Audience to be served • Goals for affiliating with ACM • Key organizer(s) with CVs

  8. Activities May Include • Electronic News • Distribution lists • Conferences and Workshops • Activities and interests to the EIG community

  9. Limitations • No Awards • No elected Officials • No fund balance • No representation on the SGB

  10. Finances • Monitored by and the responsibility of the SGB EC with assistance from SIG Services and Finance

  11. Volunteer Leaders • Chair Appointed by the SGB Chair

  12. Benefits to EIG members • Membership • Distribution lists • Electronic News

  13. Life of an EIG • Reviewed and renewed every 2 years by SGB EC • EIGs with a 2+ year history may suggest or be invited to submit a proposal for • moving to SIG status or • join an existing SIG

  14. Responsibility of an EIG • Web page • Leader participation in occasional video conference calls • Meeting Goals set

  15. Responsibility of SGB EC • Be Responsive to all queries • Monitor Activities

  16. Responsibility of SGB • Direct leaders seeking to start and EIG to SIG Development Advisor • Be responsive to all queries

  17. Inquiries Received • Smart Connected Communities • Connected Health • Computing and Social Good • Technology Enhanced Learning • Safety and Cars
