Getting Ready for School • Children are not expected to come into Junior Infants knowing anything formal! • Practise taking their coats on and off • Encourage them to use the toilet properly • Play construction games, painting and colouring to improve visual, hand eye coordination • Encourage them to “help you” to encourage them to follow instructions • If reading a story, track the words with your finger – left-right orientation • Encourage independence in preparation for September

  3. The First Day...... • Nametags, games, welcome from teacher • Getting to know each other and • routines • Handling the upset child • Handling the upset adult!! • Full day from 8:50-1:10

  4. What They Will Need • Suitable clothing and footwear • Velcro shoes if they can’t tie laces • Schoolbag big enough to fit A4 folder • Keep plastic folder for homework • Lunches provided in school – milk, sandwiches, fruit. • Twistables in a pencil case (labelled)‏

  6. School Subjects English, Irish, Maths •History, Geography, Science •Visual Arts, Music, Drama •S.P.H.E. •Religious Education PE • Aistear – learning through play • Thematic Approach

Homework Encourage a good routine Complete in a positive way, they will need a little break after school but as soon after that as possible Use writing pencils only for written work and crayons or colouring pencils for colouring Encourage “their best work” Homework Folders on Table first thing in the morning Check homework bags for notes, notes usually in hands at home time 10-15 minutes long

Morning Routines • The school day begins at 8.30 when children enter the classroom • Hang Up coats and school bag • Homework Folders left on their table • Activities • Socialisation • Fostering independence • Reading – later in the year • Formal teaching begins at 8.50 • Notes may be passed on or an appointment made if necessary

  9. A School Day • 8:30 – 8:50 Teacht le chéile • Break 10.20 • Yard time • Lunch 12:00 • Yard time • 1:10 home time

  10. Working together Positive communication •Notes in bags •Get involved – maths for fun •Your expertise is valuable! •Motivating and fun for the children!

Things to remember • Sponsored walk, church service, school tour, swimming, GAA, maths for fun • Leave toys at home • Parent teacher meetings (usually November) and informal chats (after school). Make an appointment if you wish to speak to me. • PLEASE SAVE ME YOUR JUNK! • Egg cartons, toilet rolls, every so often I will collect for Junk Art or classroom activities
