Measured in grans per cubic center meter Increases with a increase in salinity and decreases in temperature Salinity increases when evaporation occurs or when seawater comes out of solution in freezing to form ice. Pressure also affects the density of seawater

  4. Continued Sea water that is not very dense remains on the surface Combination of colder temperature and high salinities produces dense water at 30 degrees The water extends from the surface of the other hemisphere

  5. The characteristics of temp in salinity and density change with depth Ocean surface layer extends down to about 100 meters warmed by solar heating and well mixed by a variety of process. Process called Thermoclinethis is when rapid temperature is occurring Increase of salinity with depth of 1000m called Halocline Pycnocline- zone where density increases rapidly with depth

Vertical Mixing When density increase with water, it becomes stable Isopycnal- Same density from top to bottom Any process that increases density of surface water will cause vertical mixing Important vertical mixing provides a mean of exchanging nutrient rich bottom water with trolled temperature and salinity this is called Thermohaline circulation

Upwelling's And Downwellings Upwelling zone are regions where bottom water rising to the surface It is a result of changes in the density or divergent surface currents Downwelling -- Represents areas where the surface waster is sinking Downweilling areas result from surface water regions or the action of wind-driven surface currents that produce convergence.
