  25. Basic Computer Skills Now let’s look at a laptop (sometimes called “notebook”) computer. Its parts may look different, but they work the same. The size of a laptop screen is measured diagonally: The screen is the “monitor” of the laptop.

  26. Basic Computer Skills A laptop also has a keyboard to type in data:

  27. Basic Computer Skills The button to turn the computer on and off is found on the top…

  28. Basic Computer Skills … or on the front.

  29. Basic Computer Skills Instead of a mouse, most laptops have a touchpad to move the cursor: If you can’t (or don’t want to) use the touch pad, you can plug a mouse into one of the USB ports on the side or back of the laptop! You will learn about those in a later slide.

  30. Basic Computer Skills You almost never find a 3.5” disk drive on a laptop, but most do have a CD-ROM drive on one side:

  31. Basic Computer Skills Laptops usually have places (called “ports”) to plug things into them on the sides…

  32. Basic Computer Skills … or sometimes on the back.

  33. Basic Computer Skills Okay. That covers the basic parts of a computer. Now: what can you use it for? There are any number of tools called “software” or “programs” that can do many things. Let’s look at some of the most common pieces of software you might need.
