What is advertising?

  • Advertising is used to inform, remind and persuade an audience about a particular:
  • Product
  • A place or business
  • A service, or
  • A cause

Creating an advertising video

There are four phases to create an advertising video:

PLANNING

CREATING

EDITING

MARKETING

PLANNING PHASE

  • Think about the idea you wish to market
  • Think of your target audience
  • Select a genre (comedy, drama, romance, horror etc.)
  • BRAINSTORM
    • What’s your idea?
    • Where are you going to film?
    • Who are your characters and who are your actors?
    • When are you available to film?
    • What sort of environment do you need (consider the weather)?
  • Construct a storyboard
  • Furnish a script
  • Rehearse script with your actors
  • Do you have a camera? Blank tapes? Let’s go to the next phase…

CREATING PHASE

Your actors should know your script. Organise a meeting point with them. Don’t forget your props, costumes and any other equipment.

Start filming:

SHOT  SCENE FINAL PRODUCT

(PARAGRAPH  CHAPTER  BOOK)

SHOT: From when you start recording till you pause.

SCENE: Usually filmed in one location.

FINAL PRODUCT: All shots and scenes are filmed to create the final product!

EDITING PHASE

Connect your camera to the computer

Open the video editing software you wish to use

Combine, cut, edit the footage you have captured to create your video

Add music, voice over or sound FX to make your video more exciting

Is your video finished? Burn it onto a DVD, USB or video. Last phase…

Now your video is done, let’s sell your idea ….

  • A lot of tourists visit the Torres Strait, but most of them go
  • straight to Thursday Island and fail to explore our beautiful
  • island – Horn Island!
  • Exercise: Create a travel/tourism advertisement for Horn
  • Island. Start by creating a STORYBOARD.
  • Ideas:
  • What can visitors do at Horn Island?
  • What can they see here?
  • What shops, restaurants and other services do we have?
  • Schools, police station, medical centre?
  • What about the people? Are they friendly?
  • Where can visitors stay?
  • Are there any tours? Do we have history? War sites?
  • Start thinking about what beautiful landscapes we have
  • for your video (the wharf, blue water, beaches, Kings Point,
  • Cable Beach, airport, new roads, new shop, school, sport
  • stadium)
