  1. Biomes of the World

  2. Biomes are major types of communities and ecosystems that are typical of broad geographic regions.

  3. Tundra: - no tall trees - lies north of Arctic Circle - supports mostly tough grasses and shrubs - underneath top few inches of soil is permafrost, which is permanently frozen soil - swamps and bogs occur where top layers defrost insummer - mosses and lichens cover the tundra (don’t need soil)

  4. Exposed Permafrost with vegetation on top

  5. Musk Ox Creatures of the Tundra Lemming Reindeer Snowy Owl Arctic Fox

  6. Taiga: (coniferous/boreal forest) long, cold winters and short, wet summers that are occasionally warm

  7. Bohemian Wax Wing Ermine Hawk Owl Lynx Marten Moose Wolverine Taiga Creatures

  8. Temperate Deciduous Forest mid-latitude, enough moisture to support growth of large trees. Cold winters to hot summers.

  9. Equator

  10. Temperate Deciduous Forest Creatures Black Bear Grey Squirrel Turkey White-tailed deer Raccoon WildBoar Copperhead

  11. Temperate Grassland: rich soil, hot summer to cold winter, tall grass in wetter regions; short grass in drier regions.

  12. Grassland “Prairie” Creatures Rattlesnake Prairie Dogs Bison Coyote Jack Rabbit

  13. Chaparral: Scrubland, mild, rainy winters and long, hot, dry summers

  14. Equator Chaparral around the world

  15. Chaparral Creatures Aardwolf Grey Fox Puma Wild Goat Spotted Skunk

  16. Desert: driest of all biomes, low and/or unpredictable precipitation

  17. Equator

  18. Desert Creatures Armadillo Lizard Javelina Bobcat Cactus Wren Pronghorn Antelope

  19. Tropical Savanna Grassland Grassland with scattered individual trees

  20. Equator Tropical Savannas of the World

  21. Tropical Savanna Creatures Caracal Grant’s Gazelle Warthog

  22. Tropical Rainforest: near equator, rainfall is abundant (greater than 250 cm per year!), short dry season

  23. Rain Forest Creatures Ocelot Leaf-cutter ants White-faced Capuchin Monkey Poison dart frog

  24. Flowing Water (streams and rivers): organisms need to be strong swimmers or be able hold fast Water Biomes

  25. Standing Water (ponds and lakes):photic zone-light can reach; aphotic zone-light does not reach (lakes)

  26. Inland Wetland: (freshwatermarshes, swamps, and bogs): covered all or part of the time by water

  27. Coastal Wetland (mangrove swamp): along the seacoast that are continually or periodically flooded by saltwater

  28. Estuary (salt marsh, mudflats): an area where a freshwater stream or river merges with the ocean, salinity varies

  29. Marine Zones (intertidal, coral reef, neritic, pelagic(open ocean), benthos(ocean bottom): the oceans and their shorelines
