Graduation Requirements- continuedSubject to Change per State Law • Students must earn 18 points on seven end-of-course exams in order to graduate. **These tests replace the OGT test for the Class of 2018 and beyond** • End of Course exams will be given for - English 9 & 10 - Algebra 1 & Geometry - Biology - U.S. History & U.S. Government • Students can earn from 1-5 points for each exam, based on their performance. (5-Advanced, 4-Accelerated, 3-Proficient, 2-Basic, 1-Limited)

  5. Earning High School Credits • Credits are earned each semester • 1.0 Credit for full-year courses • 0.5 Credit for one-semester courses • EXCEPTIONPhysical Education =0.25 credit per semester Must earn 4 credits to reach 10th grade status

Grades & G.P.A. • Semester Grades are Recorded on the Transcript (Your academic Record) • A semester grade is comprised of two quarters and the semester exam. • GPA is important for Post-High School Plans • F’s earn no credit and are NEVERremoved from the student’s transcript More information available on the website or in the student planner.

  12. World Language, Fine Art, and/or Business Requirement • A student must complete one credit from one of the academic areas above in order to graduate. • The 1.0 credit can be a combination of a half credit from 2 different areas.

Physical Education/Health Physical Education • ½ credit required, 2 semesters to graduate • Foundation of Physical Activity – to be taken 9th grade year • Remaining .25 credit to be taken 10th-12th grades • Students who participate in SHS Sports, Marching Band or Cheerleading, may be eligible for PE Waiver, waiving the P.E. Requirement. You must fill out the application. • Credit Flex may be substituted for the PE course. Health – To be taken 9th Grade Year • Required Course (#000911) – ½ Credit

  14. World Language Options: French 1 • German I • Spanish I • 2 years of a World Language is recommended for College Entrance • Students who struggle with reading may struggle in these courses.

Pre-Engineering (Project Lead the Way) INTRODUCTION TO PRE-ENGINEERING DESIGN (IED) – Year 1 • Co-requisites: Algebra I, a lab fee will be charged • This course uses a design development process while enriching problem-solving skills; students create and analyze models using specialized computer software. • Pathway to Pre-engineering is a four-year course of study integrated into the students’ core curriculum. • Combination of traditional math and science courses with innovative Pathway to Pre-Engineering courses prepares students for college major in engineering fields. • Offers the the opportunity to earn college credit while still in high school. • Courses engage students through a combination of activities-based, project-based, and problem-based learning.

Honors Courses The Honors Student: Does extra reading…thoroughly answers essay questions…fully participates in class discussions…does all homework…willingly does research…commits to spending time in challenging courses • Students may change levels within the first 3 days of the semester, with parent permission. Beyond this, changes must be teacher-initiated and only for students who are struggling with D’s or F’s • Will have required summer readings and/or projects

  20. P.E. Waiver • A way to complete one’s Physical Education requirement. • Students receive no credit and no grade. • Student may waive P.E. requirement by completing two full seasons of SHS athletics, cheerleading or marching band. • Physical Education Waiver Application and more information can be found on the SHS Guidance Website. • Students may not mix P.E. Waiver with Physical Education classes to meet the requirement. Must have 2 waivers or 2 courses, not one of each.

  21. Credit Flexibility • Credit Flexibility allows students to earn credit by demonstrating academic and skill level performance through a variety of educational options. • Approved credit awarded through these guidelines will be posted on a student’s transcript and counted as required graduation credit in the related subject area or as an elective. • A student must complete the Credit Flexibility Application and obtain approval PRIOR to beginning the coursework. • See the SHS Guidance website for more information and the Application

Athletic Eligibility • All incoming 9th graders must pass a minimum of 5 classes during the 4th quarter of the 8th grade year • If a student earns less than 2.0 GPA during the 4th quarter of the 8th grade year, student will be put on an Academic contract • At SHS, must pass 5 classes (not including P.E.) the quarter preceding the season • FALL SPORTS: CROSS-COUNTRY, SOCCER, FOOTBALL, GOLF, VOLLEYBALL, GIRLS TENNIS

  25. CCP College Credit Plus • Get high school and college credit at the same time • Students must apply and be accepted by the Institution of Higher Learning (requires specific GPA and Placement Test score) • Both student and parent MUST attend mandatory meeting on February 11th or 12th at 6:00 P.M. in the SHS Auditorium

Things to remember when selecting courses: • The high school has an 8 period day • Select English, math, science, & social studies • 5 class periods minimum (Not including P.E.) • Lunch for one period • Electives • Maximum of 7 classes • Teacher recommendations are the best guide to choosing the right courses

  27. Scheduling Do’s & Don’ts: • DO look at YOUR History • DON’T select courses based on friends • DO look at your ability – realistically • DON’T select “easy” courses • DOlook at your future plans • DON’T expect to be able to easily change your electives next year

  28. Keys to a Successful Year… • Write down all assignments and tests (planner) • Study/review daily (notecards for vocab) • Complete all assignments • Take notes • Check for teacher websites • Ask for help from parents, teachers, friends • Plan for tests and projects
