  1. Kinematics Equations Part 1 The physics of how an object moves: Howfar does it go, Howfast does it go, Howfast it gets faster or slower, Howlong does it take, And the math that goes with it.

  2. Solving Problems GUESS method Why? This is a method for successful analysis of a word problem. It is a great way to show work. A way to organize your solution. A way to be sure your solution is complete.

  3. Solving Problems GUESS method How? G – identify the given information in the problem (including hidden information) U – identify the unknown E- find and write out the correct equation S – substitute the given information in to the equation properly S – solve the equation, include units.

  4. Making Kinematics Understandable

  5. Average Speed Average Speed = distance traveled time v = d t Change in, remember slope

  6. Example Jessie drives 6 km to get to softball practice. The practice field is only 4 km away from home if she could use her hovercraft and fly straight to practice. Find her average speed if the total time for the trip takes 500 s.

  7. Velocity Velocity = displacement time v = d t

  8. Example Jessie drives 6 km to get to softball practice. The practice field is only 4 km away from home if she could use her hovercraft and fly straight to practice. Find her average velocity if the total time for the trip takes 500 s

  9. Acceleration Acceleration = change in velocity time a = v t

  10. Example A car starts to accelerate from rest. Three seconds later the car is going 20 m/s. What is the car’s acceleration?

  11. Some Helpful Equations vf = vi + at d = vit + ½ at2 These will help you find: vf - final velocity vi - initial velocity a – acceleration d – displacement t - time

  12. Example A cyclist is riding down the road at 5 m/s. The cyclist begins pedaling faster and accelerating at a rate of 2 m/s2 for 4 seconds. What is the cyclist’s velocity after this time of acceleration?

  13. Example A track runner starts at rest. The starter shoots the gun and the runner takes off. The runner accelerates at a constant rate of 3 m/s2 for 6 seconds. How far down the track has he run?
