GILMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM Gilman Program Overview The Gilman International Scholarship Program diversifies the kinds of students who study abroad and the countries and regions where they go. The Gilman Program supports undergraduates who have high financial need and awards scholarships of up to $5,000 for study abroad for up to one academic year.

  4. B E N J A M I N A. GILMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM Eligibility Requirements Study Abroad Program must be approved for academic credit. Must be a U.S. citizen. 4 1 3 Must be studying abroad for a minimum of four weeks in one country. 2 Must be receiving a Pell Grant.

  5. B E N J A M I N A. GILMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM Eligibility Requirements (Cont.) Must be an undergraduate student in good academic standing. Applications accepted twice a year, in April and October. 8 5 Can study in any country other than one on the U.S. Department of State’s Travel Warning list or Cuba. 7 Must be studying abroad during the fall, spring or academic year terms. 6

  6. B E N J A M I N A. GILMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM Gilman Scholarship Awards • Awards up to $5,000 • Average Award is $4,000 • Limited Number of Critical Need Language Supplements Available

GILMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM Critical Need Language Supplement • Students who apply for and receive the Gilman Scholarship to study abroad are now eligible to receive an additional $3,000 Critical Need Language Supplement from the Gilman Program for a total possible award of up to $8,000. • Applicants who are studying a “critical need language” while abroad will automatically be considered for the “Critical Need Language Supplement” award.

GILMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM Critical Need Language Supplement (Cont.) “Critical Need Languages” Include: • Arabic (all dialects); • Chinese (all dialects); • Turkic (Azerbaijani, Kazakh, Kyrgz, Turkish, Turkmen, Uzbek); • Persian (Farsi, Dari, Kurdish, Pashto, Tajiki); • Indic (Hindi, Urdu, Nepali, Sinhala, Bengali, Punjabi, Marathi, Gujarati, Sindhi); • Korean; and • Russian.

GILMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM Preference Factors • Non-traditional countries, those outside of Western Europe, Australia, and New Zealand • Study of “Critical Need Language” • Longer length of study • Diversity of student • Type & diversity of Institution • Potential for impact on the student • Academic Progress & Performance

  10. B E N J A M I N A. GILMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM How to Apply: • The Gilman Scholarship Application is only available online. Review application instructions and verify eligibility on the websiteat www.iie.org/gilman. • There are four components to the Gilman Scholarship Application: 1.Online student section; 2. Online study abroad advisor certification; 3. Online financial aid advisor certification; and 4. Three paper copies of the student's transcript(s). • Consult the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) section on the Gilman website for more information.

GILMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM What goes into the application? • Statement of Purpose Essay • Address the impact that your study abroad program will have on your academic, professional, and personal goals. • Also address the impact that receiving the Gilman Scholarship would have on your achievement of these goals. • Follow-On Service Project Proposal • All Gilman Scholars are required to carry out a follow-on project upon their return from abroad that helps to promote international education and the Gilman International Scholarship. • This can be done on your home campus or in your local community and must be completed within six months of your return home. • Be mindful of: • Target audience and message • Method of presenting

GILMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM Examples of Follow-On Service Projects • K-12 Outreach • Academic Department Outreach • Campus Office Outreach (Admissions, Student Affairs, Multicultural and Service Organizations, etc.) • Study Abroad Office Outreach • Other (campus or hometown newspaper article, create website, working/volunteering, etc.)

GILMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM What makes an application competitive? • Meet many of the preference factors, especially country of destination. • If studying in a traditional location, student should pay particular attention to addressing why the location is critical to their goals. • Have well-written, coherent, thoughtful and proofread essays that address all questions. • Essays should address the impact that their study abroad program will have on the student's academic, professional and personal goals.  • Have well-developed, creative, and achievable follow-on project statements.
