  3. Chlamydia(Transmission) • Bacterium that’s passed through sexual contact • Can be spread from one body site to another with fingers

  4. Chlamydia(Symptoms) • Women • Pelvic Inflammatory Disease • Disrupted menstruation • Pelvic pain • Raised temperature • Nausea • Vomiting • Headache • Infertility • Ectopic pregnancy

  5. Chlamydia(Men) • Symptoms • Men • Urethra infection • Discharge and burning during urination • Heaviness in and painful swelling at the bottom of affected testis • Inflammation of scrotum

  6. Chlamydia(Treatment) • Tested: Lab Test, Urine Sample • Treated With: Antibiotics • Doxycycline for 7 days • OR • 1 Dose of azithromycin

  7. Gonorrhea(Transmission) • Passed through penile-vaginal, oral-genital, oral-anal or genital-anal contact

  8. Gonorrhea(Symptoms) • Women • Green or yellowish discharge • Usually goes undetected • Pelvic inflammatory disease

  9. Gonorrhea(Symptoms) • Men • Cloudy discharge from penis and burning when urinating • Painful swelling at the bottom of the affected testis • Inflammation of the scrotum

  10. Gonorrhea(Treatment) • Tested: Swab, urinalysis • Treated: antibiotics • Dual therapy of one dose of ceftriaxone, cefixime, ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin, or ofloxacin plus one dose of azithromycin • Or doxycycline for 7 days

  11. Nongonococcal Urethritis (NGU) • Pathogen: Bacteria • Where: Penis, Vagina, Anus, Throat • How: Direct contact with mucous membrane during sex

  12. NGU Symptoms (Women) • Mild discharge of pus from vagina • Often undetected • Burning or pain when urinating

  13. NGU Symptoms (Men) • Discharge from penis and irritation during urination

  14. NGU Treatment • Tested: Culture, Urinalysis • Treated with antibiotics

  15. Syphillis • Bacterium passed from open lesions during penile- vaginal, oral- genital, oral-anal, or genital- anal contact.

Syphilis Symptoms • Primary Stage • Painless chancre at site where bacterium entered body • Secondary Stage • Chancre disappears, and generalized skin rash appears • Latent Stage • There may be no visible symptoms • Tertiary Stage • Heart failure, blindness, mental disturbance, and more; death may result.

  17. Syphilis (Treatment) • Benzathine penicillin G, doxycycline, erythromycin, or ceftriaxone

  19. Herpes • Genital Herpes Virus • Pathogen: Virus • Where: penis, vagina, anus, mouth, eye • HSV-2 passed primarily through penile-vaginal, oral- genital, oral-anal, or genital anal contact • HSV-1 (oral herpes) • Passed by kissing or oral-genital contact

Herpes Symptoms • Most people have no symptoms • Herpes 1= cold sores and fever blisters on the mouth • Herpes 2= genital sores or blisters • Outbreak starts as red bumps and then turn into painful blisters or sores • First Outbreak= • Flu-like symptoms: fever, headache and swollen glands • Usually appear within the first two weeks of infection • Viruses can stay in the body forever and may cause recurrent outbreaks

  21. Herpes Treatment • Tested: Visual, culture of the blister • No cure • Medications can help reduce pain and itching as well as recurrent outbreaks • Daily medication can also reduce the likelihood of spreading the infection

  22. Hepatitis B Virus • Pathogen: A viral infection • Where: affecting the liver • Acute or Chronic • Spread through unprotected vaginal, oral and anal sex • Spread through childbirth and sharing contaminated needles • Chance of getting it through kissing is very low

  23. Hepatitis B Virus Symptoms • Many people don’t have symptoms • Some experience tiredness, aches, nausea and vomiting, loss of appetite, darkening of urine or tenderness of the stomach • Symptoms appear usually within one to 6 months of exposure • Jaundice may occur as well

  24. Hepatitis B Virus Treatment • Tested: Urinalysis, Blood test • Illness can last up to 6 months • Treated with rest, nutrition and fluids • Can be treated with Antiviral drugs as well • Utilize doctor’s advice on how to care for the liver

  32. Trichomoniasis Transmission • Pathogen: • A parasitic infection of the genital area • How:Unprotected vaginal intercourse

  33. Trichomoniasis Symptoms • Often there are no symptoms • Women have yellowish-green vaginal discharge • Genital discomfort • Usually within 4 days to a month after exposure • Men may notice discharge from the penis

  34. Trichomoniasis Treatment • Antibiotics can cure the infection • Both partners must be treated at the same time to prevent passing it back and forth • Both partners need to abstain from intercourse until the infection is gone
