SShrishti: Background • Location: Delhi (Kishangarh), started in 2003 • Initiatives – • Ladli (Nursery) and Learning Center (KG-IV); formal education schools • Run from rented premises • In addition, they have a remedial center + they are running computer centers in nearby villages • Started a school in Jai Hind Camp (oct’09 ) • AfE funding this project since 2006, SV started funding in 2009 • Community - families of migrant workers living in slum area near Kishangarh • Families move to find work • Transitioning interrupts the education of children • Kids lose a year or two • Children who start schooling at an older age are put through an accelerated learning program to bring them up to their age level • Total of 28 children placed in govt schools in class VI. Some of them received only 3-4 years of schooling at Sshrishti.
6 monthly update :2010-11 session [1] • We currently fund Learning Center - rent, 5 teachers, cook, accountant + other running cost (food, electricity etc.). • Approved funding for year 2010-11 - Rs.9,79,950 • Raised money to support salaries of project coordinator and computer teacher thru other channels. • ‘10-’11 Student strength = 116 (Girls: 44, Boys: 72). Attendance is about 80 per day. • English, Hindi, Maths and EVS ; computer, drawing, painting, music and dance - activity classes. • Each class has a spoken english daily; taken by Vols from Germany (2) and US (2). • expecting another volunteer from England during summer vacation; may plan a summer english class similar to 2010 summer. • Retention of teachers better than previous years. • All children receive mid-day meal + glass of milk (partially supported by food bank). • “Penfriend” program set up with a school in Germany.
6 monthly update :2010-11 session[2] • Community outreach: • Two meetings were held with the slum dwellers to discuss issues of education, health and hygiene. • Staff members visit the slums once a month and hold interactive sessions there. • Fundraising Efforts: • Fundraising done thru Annual day. • Raised about Rs.1,70,000 through Give India’s online platform from Nov 09 to Jan 2011. • 5 participants ran the Delhi marathon but the fund raising was negligible. • Working on a formal corporate presentation to approach companies.
