  1. Welcome to the LENGTH Tutorial

  2. We can measure length in… • Millimetres (mm) • Centimetres (cm) • Metres (m) • Kilometres (km)

  3. Look at your ruler. It is 30cm long. Look closely at each centimetre division on your ruler. You can see it is divided into 10 smaller units. These are millimetres (mm). There are 10 millimetres in every centimetre. 10mm = 1cm

  4. Use your ruler to draw these lines in your book. cm mm 4cm 36mm 6.5cm 49mm 11.5cm 87mm 14.5cm 58mm 10cm 101mm Show your work to your teacher.

  5. So to convert cm to mm we have to multiply by 10. e.g. 3cm = 3x10mm = 30mm Now work out these. Check on your ruler! 6cm = 23cm = 7cm = 13.5cm= 15cm= 29.5cm= 60mm 70mm 150mm 230mm 135mm 295mm Click to reveal the answers afterwards!

  6. And to convert mm to cm we have to divide by 10. e.g. 30mm = 30÷10cm= 3cm Now work out these. Check on your ruler! 80mm = 25mm = 40mm = 165mm= 15mm= 275mm= 8cm 4cm 1.5cm 2.5cm 16.5cm 27.5cm Click to reveal the answers afterwards!

  7. What about measuring longer lengths like your height or the length of the room? What unit of measurement would you use? Metres (m) Were you right? 100cm = 1 m

  8. If we convert cm to m we need to divide by 100. Look at these examples: 300cm (÷100) = 3m 450cm (÷100) = 4.5m 605cm (÷100) = 6.05m The decimal point moves 2 places to the left when dividing by 100 to make your answer smaller.

  9. So to convert centimetres to metres we need to divide by 100 (move the decimal point 2 places to the left). e.g. 400cm = 400÷100m = 4m Copy and complete this table in your book. Show your completed table to your teacher.

  10. To convert m to cm we therefore need to multiply by 100 as there are 100 cm in every m. Look at these examples: 4m (x100) = 400cm 3.25m (x100) = 325cm 6.7m (x100) = 670cm 5.08m (x100) = 508cm The decimal point moves 2 places to the right when multiplying by 100 to make your answer BIGGER. Don’t forget to use 0 as a place holder when you need it!

  11. And to convert metres to centimetres we need to multiply by 100. e.g. 4m = 4 x 100cm = 400cm Copy and complete this table in your book. Show your completed table to your teacher.

  12. Now you can convert millimetres to centimetres, centimetres to millimetres, centimetres to metres and metres to centimetres! Think about this… How many millimetres would there be in a metre? Tell your teacher your answer. If you are right you might get a sticker!

  13. Did you get it right? 1000mm = 1m Why? BECAUSE 100cm = 1m And there are 10mm in each cm so 100 x 10 = 1000

  14. What about even bigger lengths like the distance between your school and the town centre or the distance between Swindon and London? What unit of measurement would you use? Kilometres (km) Were you right? 1000m = 1km

  15. To convert m to km we need to divide by 1000, so this time we move the decimal point 3 places to the left to make our answer SMALLER: 6000m (÷1000) = 6km 500m (÷1000) = 0.5km 5670m (÷1000) = 5.67m Look at the examples carefully and remember your answer will be SMALLER when dividing.

  16. So to convert metres to kilometres we need to divide by 1000. e.g. 4000m = 4000÷1000m = 4km Copy and complete this table in your book. Show your completed table to your teacher.

  17. Therefore when converting km to m we need to multiply by 1000 as there are 1000m in every km. Look at these: 7km (x1000) = 7000m 3.5km (x1000) = 3500m 0.2km (x1000) = 200m 1.003km (x1000) = 1003m Remember to move the decimal point 3 places to the right to make your answer BIGGER as you are multiplying.

  18. And to convert kilometres to metres we need to multiply by 1000. e.g. 9km = 9 x 1000m = 9000m Copy and complete this table in your book. Show your completed table to your teacher.

  19. Well Done! You are a length Mastermind! But there are a few more facts you need to know…

  20. If 1km = 1000m, what is… 500m 250m 750m ½ km = ____m? ¼ km = ____m? ¾ km = ____m? Write the answers in your book and show to your teacher. Now click to reveal the correct answers.

  21. If 100cm = 1m, what is… 50cm 25cm 75cm ½ m = ____cm? ¼ m = ____cm? ¾ m = ____cm? Write the answers in your book and show to your teacher. Now click to reveal the correct answers.

  22. If 10mm = 1cm, what is… 5mm 2.5mm 7.5mm ½ cm = ___mm? ¼ cm = ___mm? ¾ cm = ___mm? Write the answers in your book and show to your teacher. Now click to reveal the correct answers.
