  3. According to Dr. Fred F. Videon, professor emeritus, department of civil engineering and engineering mechanics, Montana State University, the truss bridge is based on triangles. The first truss bridges were built around 1500. Modern trusses, often constructed of steel, form a series of interlocking triangles which support the roadway or deck which is located on top of the trusses.
