  3. Characteristics of a Short Story • 1. It is based on one incident or character • 2. It has usually from 3-6 characters • 3. It represents a conflict situation, from which suspense rises. • 4. It may or may not have a definite conclusion.

  4. Character • Developed in several ways: • description • quotes • actions Describe them Quote them What do they do?

  5. Theme • The big idea, purpose, or message of the story.

  6. Literary Devices • Which ones have we already learned? Which ones can you identify?

Not even Noah himself could have built a stronger vessel, I thought as the ship rocked and swayed. • As I approached the island, I felt as if something dark and sinister was in the air. • However I was eager to leave the ocean and find rest on the island – safe at last. • The fog was a thick, heavy blanket. • Suddenly, I heard something breathe heavily behind me… • BANG! A gunshot! My leg is screaming in pain. • As I lay on the grimy ground, my vision began to blur. The last thing I see is a face.
