Preventing Fires You can… • Identify & inspect fire hazards in your house • Use lab tested & approved heaters • Keep fire away from children • Keep combustible objects away from the stove
Preparing for Fires Make sure to have… • Smoke detectors throughout your house • Multiple escape routes throughout your house • Fire department’s emergency number • A safe, outdoor meeting place • A window ladder Make sure to practice… • The escape plan • Alerting people in a fire
What to do if You See a Fire or Hear the Smoke Alarm • Yell “fire!” and exit the room SAFELY and QUICKLY • Follow your escape plan when possible • Head to your meeting place • Call the fire department from outside the house
What to do if Smoke/Heat/Flames Block All Exit Routes • Examine door • Use wet towels, sheets, clothes, etc. to stop smoke • Open windows slightly • Stay low and near a window • Signal the fire department when they arrive • Follow fire department's instructions
