  4. Overview • We will discuss four of the basic elements or building blocks of music. • We will see how these elements work together

  5. Vocabulary • Notes • Melody • Harmony • Rhythm

  6. Music has a plan or form • We recognize the form of a tree. • It has leaves, branches, a trunk. • Music has a form including notes, melody, harmony and rhythm.

  7. Sounds • Sounds are invisible waves moving through air in waves, just as water moves in waves.

  8. Notes are the sounds that we hear. • Notes have a specific pitch and length. Some are long and some are short. • Notes on the music are symbols of the sounds they represent.

  9. M Melody • A line of notes put together one after the other is a melody • The notes are the part of the music that catches you ear as you listen.

  10. The notes of the melody may go up, down or be repeated. • Interesting melodies have notes that move up or down more than they repeat. • Good melodies are easy to remember.

  11. Melodies may be simple • This is a familiar melody, it is easy to sing and remember.

  12. Melodies may be complicated • The “Star Spangled Banner” has a complicated melody. It is more difficult to learn.

  13. Harmony • Harmony happens when two or more notes are heard at the same time. • The harmony supports the melody. • Harmony helps create a feeling or mood.

  14. Rhythm • The rhythm is the pattern of the length of the notes. • Rhythm may have a fast ,moderate or slow speed. • The rhythm helps the harmony create the mood of the music.

  15. Rhythm • Rhythm means musical time. • It comes from a Greek word that means flow.

  16. The composer plans how they will use the • notes • melody • harmony • rhythm to create a certain kind of song. They create something beautiful that they can share with others.

  17. God’s creation • God created us to follow his plan and become the beautiful people he planned for us to be.
