    First of all let me thank the organizer and the UNESCAP for giving the Ministry of Gender and Family this opportunity to be here and present the initiative of the Government for the empowerment of women of the Maldives. As Maldives is very new to the E-business especially e-business development for women, I would like to make my presentation on the commitment of the Government of Maldives for the Empowerment of Women. First of all let me thank the organizer and the UNESCAP for giving the Ministry of Gender and Family this opportunity to be here and present the initiative of the Government for the empowerment of women of the Maldives. As Maldives is very new to the E-business especially e-business development for women, I would like to make my presentation on the commitment of the Government of Maldives for the Empowerment of Women.

    Slide 2:GAD Policy in the Maldives

    The National Machinery for the advancement of Women is the Ministry of Gender and Family. The mandate of the Ministry focuses on: Gender mainstreaming for effective inclusion of gender concerns in all policies, programmes and projects and, Eliminating all existing gender disparities through active promotion of gender equity and equality, and where necessary, affirmative action.

    Adopting a comprehensive Gender Policy Gender sensitization Strengthening the GMS Encouraging male participation Addressing Gender Based Violence Analysing data and identifying and addressing gender disparities Identifying present and emerging gender issues

    Slide 5:Gender Mainstreaming and Institutionalizing Women’s Development

    Gender Management System was put in place in 2001, with the establishment of the Gender Equality Council and Gender Focal Points. Island Women’s Development Committees Sixth National Development Plan reaffirms gender mainstreaming as a priority issue Draft 7th NDP – Gender issue covered across sectors as a cross cutting issues. A National Gender Policy formulated and endorsed by the Cabinet Family Law of 2001

    Slide 7:CHALLENGES

    The massive tsunami that inundated the region set back the country by several years of development. Considerable damage to health and education facilities, with significant implications for women and girls, such as in the area of reproductive health, issues of access to alternative options for education etc detrimental effects to the livelihoods of women, with considerable damages to SMEs where women predominate.

    Slide 8:CHALLENGES

    The traditional beliefs that exist in the society act as a deterrent for people to fully accept the concept of gender equality. A strong legislative framework is also needed to protect the rights of women. The MGF, as the lead agency for gender issues, needs to be strengthened in order to effectively coordinate gender mainstreaming activities and provide technical support for line ministries. Easy access banking facilities in the island communities and special loan opportunities for women for income generating activities Marketing opportunities As Maldives is not yet into E-business, especially e-business for development women, I am sure that this meeting is going to be very useful as sharing experiences from the countries presented here will make way for us, Ministry of Gender and Family to start such a programm for the empowerment of women.
