    Slide 6:EuroNGI Project mission

The main mission of the Euro NGI network is to create and maintain the most prominent European center of excellence in Next Generation Internet design and engineering, acting as a “Collective Intelligence Think Tank”, representing a major support for the European Information Society industry and leading towards a European leadership in this domain. The recent technological advances will lead to exploitable innovative services once the integration of these technologies through innovative architectures is achieved. The Next Generation Internet (NGI) will offer view multi-service/multimedia, mobility, convergence (services and fixed-mobile), Quality-of-Service and variable connectivity as the norm. On one hand, future high-speed wire-line and wireless access technologies provide instant high bandwidth connectivity, which makes difficult to forecast traffic and thus to apply existing traffic engineering methods. On the other hand, the technology diversity explodes and mastering such a heterogeneous environment becomes essential to the network designer. This requires investigation into new multi-technology architectures. It is understood today that new design, planning, dimensioning and management principles are needed.

    Slide 7:EuroNGI Project mission

In this context, the main topics addressed by the NoE are: Mastering the technology diversity (vertical and horizontal integration) for the design of efficient and flexible NGI architectures. Providing required innovative traffic engineering architectures adapted to the new requirements and developing the corresponding appropriate quantitative methods. The network experts bring the required competences on the various technologies that will be integrated. They also bring a worldwide recognize expertise on the various topics that composes the traffic engineering and optimal dimensioning domain.

    Slide 8:What is a NE?

'...A Network of Excellence is an instrument for strengthening excellence by tackling the fragmentation of European research, where the main deliverable is a durable structuring and shaping of the way that research is carried out on the topic of the network. Aims and Objectives: NoE are designed to strengthen scientific and technological excellence on a particular research topic. They aim to overcome the fragmentation of European research by: - networking together the critical mass of resources - networking the expertise needed to provide European leadership NoE will also have a mandate to spread excellence beyond the boundaries of its partnership...'

    Slide 9: EuroNGI Objectives

    Slide 10:EuroNGI Objectives (1)

Goal 1 Integrating and rationalizing the European research efforts - Establishing and Updating a Knowledge Roadmap. Target 1  Establishing a map of all topics that cover the domain of the Next Generation Internet and beyond architectures. This is a scientific target. Target 2  Establishing a map of the topics that are covered in Europe and comparing it with the previous one. This is a strategic target. Target 3  Provisioning of the above defined organic hypertext document. Goal 2 Implementing a Strong Program of Jointly Executed Research Activities. Target 4  Significantly increasing the Jointly Executed Research in order to develop and maintain a stronger leadership in the domain.

    Slide 11:EuroNGI Objectives (2)

Goal 3 Sharing Methods, Tools and Platform Developments. Target 5  Open existing platforms for researchers to test their results in a way they could not afford in isolation. Target 6  Interconnecting these platforms for allowing new experimentation such as testing the scalability of the proposed architectures, or of the mechanisms and algorithms. Target 7  As a large number of software developments are underway, duplication of work is significant. A common database of software developments and tools will be created with an efficient tool to manage the versions evolution. Common developments will be facilitated and encouraged. Goal 4 Organization of internal Workshops for a thorough exchange of ideas and knowledge. Target 8  Organize workshops to support the realization of the program of Jointly Executed Research Activities.

    Slide 12:EuroNGI Objectives (3)

Goal 5 Facilitating the Information Exchange and the usage of Advanced Communication Tools.  Target 9  Implementing an Integrated Knowledge Management Target 10 Reinforcing electronic communication through the deployment of tools and infrastructure in order to increase the productivity of jointly executed activities, and share information. Goal 6 Facilitating the Mobility of Researchers and PhD Students. Target 11  Promote and facilitate medium and long term mobility of researchers and PhD students as a key factor for integration and rationalization of research efforts.

    Slide 13:EuroNGI Objectives (4)

Goal 7 Creation of a European graduate courses program for PhD students to maintain and the high expertise level. Target 12  Design and Implement a common program of post-graduate courses. Goal 8 Creation of a Summer School as a tool for communication and for training of young researchers. Target 13  Creation of the Summer School. Goal 9 Spreading Excellence. Target 14  Open the “Virtual Centre of Excellence” to non-members in order to facilitate the access to Euro-NGI provided information as well as the communication with the members of the network by the intensive usage of electronic communication infrastructures. Target 15  Implement a database of Euro-NGI publications.

    Slide 14:EuroNGI Objectives (5)

Target 16 Researchers and other key staff training activities through open summer schools, joint lectures, etc. Target 17  Transfer knowledge between Euro-NGI and industry and especially with SMEs. Target 18  Dissemination and communication to the scientific community: networking activities to assist knowledge transfer: open workshops, conferences, participating in standard bodies, etc. Target 19  Publication of books and white papers providing an integrated view of complementary domains when the task requires the integration that will be achieved in Euro-NGI. Target 20  Building relationship with new groups that might later join forces with Euro-NGI. Target 21  Coordinate and develop existing contributions to standardization bodies. Goal 10 Consolidate collaboration with industry.
