  1. Alternatives to Surgical Sterilization Joyce Briggs Alliance for Contraception in Cats and Dogs (ACC&D)

  2. Challenges of surgical sterilization

  3. What we’re working toward: • Safe (for animals and the people giving it to the animals) and Effective • Permanent (some opportunity for long-term) • Can be given in one treatment • Non-reproductive benefits • Affordable • Products for males, females, cats and dogs

  4. What’s out there: • Several short-acting treatments • ACC&D advisors assess and facilitate promising approaches • Neutersol ® will be first permanent sterilant available

  5. Neutersol-what it is: • For male dogs • Permanent • Injected into testicle (one injection for each testicle) • Destroys the sperm cells and cells that produce sperm

  6. Neutersol-more… • Effective in 99% of dogs • Does not reduce testosterone when given to adult dogs. Some reduction in puppies.

  7. Neutersol-challenges • Initial introduction not smooth (pricing, support) • ~2% of dogs have injection-site reactions. • Testosterone reduction desired in some situations

  8. Neutersol-status • Was available from 2003 to 2005 in the U.S. • Abbott Animal Health re-introducing in U.S. in 2009 • Ark Sciences launching as Esterilsol in Mexico. Late 2009 During 2008

  9. Neutersol-status 2009-2010 Potential for import of Esterilsol from Mexico at affordable rates within the next 1-2 years.

  10. The right tool for the right job

  11. Mexico-Culturally Appropriate • 10,000 dog study in Mexico. • Culture highly resistant to castration. • Discovered improvements in administration.

  12. Texas, USA-High Volume • 200 dogs in one day under tent. • Owners stayed with dogs throughout.

  13. Galapagos Islands-Portable and Culturally Appropriate • Possible to sterilize dogs many miles into the jungle. • Owners not willing to have hunting and guarding dogs castrated, but accepted Neutersol.

  14. …think about the job you’re trying to do, and what tool(s) you need…

  15. Consider how far we’ve come… • 3 minute spay • Pediatric s/n • 15K per year • TNR/ABC
