  1. Current Areas of Space-Related Health Research • Research supported through university partners: • Preventing microbial contamination in the solar system • Role of plants in extended life-support systems • Understanding physiologic changes in astronauts during space flight • Improving water quality and use in space • Research conducted in house: • Development of edible liquid delivery systems (straws) for the astronauts • Development of edible packaging for the astronaut food and clothing • Calcium fortified fruit snacks for the astronauts (e.g., Cooperating in HYDROS spacecraft project to monitor earth’s water cycle, etc.) Presenter: Gale A. Buchanan, Under Secretary for Research, Education, and Economics Agency/Organization: U.S. Department of Agriculture

  2. Promising Areas for Space-Related Health Research Collaborations • Nanotechnology • Elucidating health-related issues at the confluence of biologic, physical, and engineering sciences • Biotechnology • Providing a range of tools to understand biologic processes • Animal Sciences • Applying fundamental information more broadly to improve human and animal health • Plant Sciences • Utilizing plant resources to support life • Development of nutrient-dense, shelf-stable food and beverage products • Identification of nutrient needs and requirements to meet the needs and requirements to meet the needs for prolonged space flight. This could include studies on calcium requirements and bone mineralization.

  3. Existing Resources to Facilitate Space-Related Health Research • University system collaborators • Competitive grants programs in CSREES • National laboratories • ARS Hydrology and Remote Sensing Laboratory • ARS Food Safety Intervention Technologies Research Unit • Jean Mayer Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University (cooperative agreement w/ARS) • USDA-ARS has over 150 scientists at 6 nutrition research centers dedicated to the impact of diet on human health • Ongoing and past activities based on existing funding to conduct human nutrition research and research on new food technologies and products • USDA-ARS has unique clinical nutrition research facilities that can be used to address space flight nutrition issues
