  2. Mother called us all up with a Christmas surprise. We could go on vacation to a Disney park this Christmas, but only if we could figure out the best park for everyone.

  3. Last time we went to a Disney park we had so much fun. Everyone was ready and willing to do the work that would allow them to go again.

  4. Since we live so far away from each other it can be hard to plan things together. But if each do our own part, I know we can figure it out. Our choices were going to be Disneyland in Anaheim, California or Disney World in Orlando, Florida. *Dani in Austin *Nikki in Houma *Mom and Dad in Port Aransas

  5. Dad got out the map to see how far away each park was from Port Aransas. If Disneyland was 1,500 miles away and Disney World was 1,150 miles away, which is closer to them? How do we figure this out?

  6. He decided that subtraction would be a great way to figure this problem out. 1, 500 miles -1, 150 miles ----------------- 350 milesDisneyland is 350 miles farther way than Disney World.So Disney World is closest. 4 10 \ \

  7. Nikki hopped on her computer to see if she could figure out the distances from her home in Houma. If Disneyland is 1,851 miles away and Disney World is only 704 miles away, which one is closer? How can she figure this out?

  8. Nikki notices right away that there is a big difference between the numbers. She decides use her number sense to compare the two distances. Disneyland is 1, 851 miles away Disney Word is 704 miles away 1,851 is greater than 704 Or 1,851 > 704 So that mean that Disney World is closer to her than Disneyland.

  9. Does her answer look reasonable? Yes! Look how much smaller the arrow to Disney World is. <------- -->

  10. Dani asked a friend to help her figure out the distance to these parks from Austin.If Disney World was 1,364 miles away and Disneyland was 1,132 miles away, which park is closer?How can she solve this problem?

  11. Dani decides to use addition to solve her problem.How much would she have to add to 1,132 miles to get 1, 364 miles? She adds 2 to the ones place to get 4. Then she adds 3 to the tens place to get 6. Finally she adds 2 to the hundreds place to get 3. 1,132 +232 --------------- 1, 364 Dani found Disney World was 232 miles further away than Disneyland. Lets check her answer.

  12. 1,132 +232 ----------------------------------------------------- 1,364 Using her manipulative set Dani has found her answer to be correct.

  13. Even though everyone use a different method to solve their problem they each found the correct answer. Here are the results of their hard work. When Dad used subtraction he found that Disney World was closer for them. When Nikki used her number sense she found that Disney World was closer for her. When Dani used addition she found that Disneyland was closer for her. So with 3 out of 4 of the family members being closer to Disney World, they will go there!

  14. We are almost done. There is still one member of the family that needs to do some work for this vacation. Mom still has to figure out how much this vacation will cost us.

  15. Disney World tickets cost $53 dollars a day. If we want to go for 4 days how much would that cost each of us? Mom decides to multiply to solve her problem. 53 x4 --- 212 Each person would have to pay $212. Is that right? Lets check! 1

  16. \ + + + 53+53+53+53= 212! Mom is right! All we need to do now is get our tickets!
