Homework Policy • Webpage – must sign up for homework notification • Parent Vault – instructions link on the webpage • Homework • Nightly math/reading/language arts • Occasionally science and social studies • Incomplete Class Work = extra homework • Missing/late homework = -10% every day late • Think Central – Go Math, Science Fusion, and Journeys • Password distributed soon • Scholastic – Weekly Reader Magazine • School Binder goes home nightly

  6. Grades and Pinnacle • 100% – 90% A • 89% - 80% B • 79% - 70% C • 69% - 60% D • 59% and below F • Pinnacle is our student database system. Parents can access their child’s current grades by clicking the Pinnacle link from our school website, and logging on with their user ID and password. • User ID is their Student ID number and the password is their birthdate (YYYY/MM/DD).

  7. Honor Roll • Conduct grades below a “1” eliminate students from ALL honor rolls. • Which means if your child has ALL A’s but a 2 in behavior he/she will NOT get honor roll.

  8. Schedule! • 7:45-8:15 Morning Business • 8:15-8:50 Specials (next slide) • 8:50-10:55 Block One • 10:55-11:25 Lunch • 11:25-11:30 Transition • 11:30-12:00 Recess • 12:00-2:00 Block Two • 2:00- 2:15 Dismissal

  9. Specials Schedule! • The Special schedule for 5th grade is different from the one you might be used to in fourth grade. We rotate specials in this order: • 1. Science Lab • 2. P.E. • 3. Spanish • 4. Music • 5. Library • 6.D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything And Read) or G.R.A.D.E. (Gang Related and Drug Education) • This means that if today we went to P.E., we will then continue down the list to Friday which will be Spanish. THEN the following Monday we will go to their 6th special, Music. So specials are no longer attached to a specific day. • Students will be responsible for knowing which special they have each day. Our webpage will also have the Specials for that week. • If there is no school during the week, the rotation will also have a “day off” meaning we pick up where we left off on the rotation once school resumes.

Dismissal • Please make sure your child knows EXACTLY how he/she will be getting home from school each day. • Students are dismissed at 2:00 p.m. • Teachers NEED written / emailed notification of changes. • Please use yellow dashboard tags to expedite carpool. • Carpool students (WITHOUT younger siblings) need to be picked up by 2:30 p.m. at the circle in front of Building B. • Carpool students (WITH younger siblings) need to be picked up by 2:30 p.m. at the circle in front of Building A. • After 2:30. students will be walked to the Elementary Office and parents will be charged $25.00 a day. • Students with OLDER siblings must be picked up by 2:45 p.m. in front of Building B. • *** Walkers need to complete a separate form***

  13. Tests and Assessments • Each Friday, students take a Spelling/Vocabulary Quiz and Reading Comprehension/Grammar Test (open book) • Social Studies, Math, and Science Tests are given only when units are completed. • Check Pinnacle weekly

  14. Florida Standards Assessment- FSA • Measures performance standards in Reading/Language Arts (LAFS) and Mathematics (MAFS) • Emphasizes critical thinking and assesses students’ higher order thinking skills. • Multiple choice • Creating graphs • Interact with test content • Reflective writing (WRITING ASSESSMENT) • Testing Schedule • March 2-13: FSA Writing • March 31- April 10th- FSA English and Language Arts and Mathematics

Classroom Web Pages • A GREAT way to check for important information is through our webpage located at www.somersetacademy.com. • Every FRIDAY, we will update our web pages with homework assignments, specials for the week, important dates, upcoming events, reminders, etc. • Parents can sign up to get notifications. The instructions can be found on our webpages.

  16. Volunteer Hours • Parents must complete a total of 30 volunteer hours. If you have additional children in the middle or high school, you must add 10 additional hours for each school. • 15 hours by February • Next 15 hours by May

Ways to Volunteer… • Room Parent – see sign up sheet • Meet the Masters Program - see sign up sheet • Respect Curriculum – see sign up sheet • Classroom help • Remove and prepare chapter for math and science (in classroom) • Create and prepare science projects (at home) • Sharpen pencils (at home) If you cant Volunteer… $4 = 1 volunteer hour with receipt If an item from our WISH LIST is purchased, PLEASE complete a Volunteer Record Form and attach the receipt. I will sign the form and turn it in to the office. PLEASE do not send checks for your hours as the money will not benefit your child’s classroom.

  18. Lunch and Online payments • Lunch is $3.25 (Any amount accepted via check, payable to Somerset Academy) • All other expenses are paid online. • No cash accepted!

  20. Tardy/Attendance Somerset Academy follows Broward County Schools Attendance Policy 5.5! This means every minute counts, from absences, tardiness, and early sign outs. • School begins at 8:00 am. Students that arrive late to school must have parents sign them in at the office and pick-up a late pass before walking to the classroom. • For absences: Please provide a note or send an email explaining the reason your child was absent the day you return to schoolor send an email to moharriz@somersetacademy.com. • If you are planning for a trip or special occasion, you must submit a letter and get prior approval. Failure to get pre-approval may result in unexcused absences on your child’s attendance record.
