Today’s Objectives • Identify the differences between standards, objectives, and curriculum • Review important standards for reading and writing in Grades K-5 (Common Core State Standards) and link to learning objective • Plan for a small group lesson designed to build comprehension of narrative or expository texts – you will teach this next class
Traditional vs. Standards-based development of curriculum & testing

Common Questions • What’s the difference between an educational “standard” and an educational “objective”? • What’s the difference between local, statewide, and national standards and my curriculum? • Which set of standards do I need to follow if I teach in Rhode Island? • How do I write measurable objectives that address these standards?
Standards vs. Objectives • Educational Standard: defines the knowledge and skills students should possess at critical points in their educational career (e.g., at each grade level); provides common expectations for all students to measure up to these standards • Learning Objective: a detailed description that states the expected change in student learning, how the change will be demonstrated, and the expected level of change as a result of a specific course of instruction
Curriculum • Scripted day-to-day lesson plans that include your learning objectives; materials for measuring performance of those objectives; links to learning standards; teaching practices; and key learning experiences students will engage in • Recently, the Common Core Standards has raised red flags for some who fear the entire curriculum is being mandated when this is not the intent.

Mapping Standards to Objectives • Try it out…Work with your group to… • Read each objective. • Review Common Core Standards K-5 to locate at least one standard that each objective meets. • Write the objective number and a few notes to help recall the standard • DON’T look on the back!
Apply these standards-based objectives to your own lessons • Meet with your group and review/discuss the lesson ideas and teaching tips. • Reread your text selection (narrative or expository) to highlight key elements and draft ideas to fill in organizer to use as a teaching guide. • Plan how you will guide students through your text in a 30 minute lesson with modeling and support. Decide roles for each person.
Homework • Read Textbook (p. 117-139) Explicit Teaching (use for lesson ideas) • Plan with your group for your comprehension lesson – be prepared to teach next class (Oct. 9) • Work on Student Strategy Interview (Now due Oct. 11 or Oct. 16) • Reminder: Quiz Oct. 11
