  4. Strategies: • Provide a traineeship for every student • Provide support for students to overcome learning deficits • High expectations

Long term goal: • Every student would graduate in 2008 with HSC and a TAFE Certificate 2 • Every student would proceed onto further education or enter the workforce. • Traineeships are one part of the jigsaw that includes: • Birth to Age 5 program • Quality teaching and Quality Learning throughout their schooling • Community Partnerships • Aboriginal role models within the school • Committed staff • Experiences beyond Menindee

What is a traineeship? • It is a pathway that allows students to combine academic study with participation in the workforce and receive a TAFE Certificate. • Students are credited with two units of twelve in Year 11 and two in ten units in Year 12 • Two additional units can be claimed by completing a journal each week. • Students need to complete 50 days in each academic year. For our construction boys they do 68 days and our electrician 76. Students are expected to work at least one week during holidays. • Students get paid for their work around $80 per day. • A legal agreement is entered into as part of the deal.

Getting a Traineeship: • Menindee provides few opportunities for employment • Selecting a preferred place of employment • Students are interviewed regarding their suitability • Selling the concept to the employer • Cost to the employer is about $5000. They receive a subsidy from the Government of approximately $1000

In Partnership with Community • A determination by local community for students to succeed • Selling the concept to the community • What does a traineeship look like? • Getting a commitment of support • Credibility of the Principal • SiP’s: NSW program to create change and improvement in schools

  9. Getting Started • Support Room and Teacher • Coordinating work and school is essential • Flexibility of the school to support employers and students • The right person needs to be in place • Getting the finance to support an additional member of staff-ITAS • Changes in staffing the room

  10. Support mechanisms: • Overseas cultural experience • Weekly report card on attendance, performance and study • Aboriginal Male Educator. • Staff- Quality people

  11. Steps along the way: • Issues that arise between students and the employer • Staff attitudes • Quality Teaching – focus on ‘significance’ of traineeship • Para-professionals

  12. What we have learnt • Importance of making sure that students are matched to the area they really want to pursue • That the journey has its rewards but it is physically and emotionally draining • Community attitudes and support increases • The cost of Government’s investments at this level will be more than repaid by participation
