Second person= YOU • This is when you address the reader: • For MOST writing assignments, this is a big NO-NO! • Try to use terms such as “we” or “one” or simply avoid pronouns all together! • It is also a good idea to avoid the use of first person (such as “I” or “my”) Do not address the reader! Number 1: Second Person
Do not just say Misha and Janina were friends: this is an observation. • Instead, make an argument about their friendship: • Their friendship was important because neither would have survived without the other’s help. This can be seen when… Number 2: Make an Argument!
HOPE is a topic not a theme. • A theme, is a moral or a lesson that the author wants us to realize: • As long as one sustains hope in difficult times, survival will remain a possibility. • Hope is often all we need in order to make it through the dark times in our lives. • IF IT IS ONE WORD, IT IS A TOPIC!!! Number 3: Theme vs. TOPIC
Make sure you use SPECIFIC language and words in your writing. • For example, do not simply say that Misha changes in many ways throughout the story. • “many” is an extremely vague term! Number 4: BE SPECIFIC!
