With 2859 death reported worldwide and over 83,000 confirmed cas- es, from China, Hong Kong, Iran, South Korea, Italy , Japan, Australia and the US, it has spread to the level of a pandemic. Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-Gen- eral of the World Health Organisation, how- ever, would like to wait before declaring the virus pandemic. “We should not be too eager to declare a pandemic with a careful and clear- minded analysis of the facts,” he was reported to have said. The reason given was that coronavirus has not caused “sustained and intensive community transmission” yet. Figures seem to support Dr Ghebreyesus’ argument: Out of 1.4 billion people in Chi- na there are less than 80,000 cases, while across the world there are only 2790 cases in a population of over 6 billion. The last reported pandemic, the H1N1, commonly known as swine flu-causing virus, was in 2009- 19 and caused over 500,000 deaths globally . With no defined treatment available, there’s a race on to develop a vaccine. Scientists at Hong Kong University of Science and Technol- ogy claimed that they have identified “poten- tial vaccine targets which could be helpful for the development of a vaccine.” That’s worth half a cheer. Otherwise, there’s no sign of a vaccine yet, nor will it available before next year. According to the BBC, “…even if sci- entists can celebrate having developed a vaccine before Christmas there is still the massive job of being able to mass-produce it.” Its affordability will also be an issue. Until a vaccine is developed and its efficacy and side effects tested, the best way to ward off the risk of catching the virus is hygiene. Besides disrupting normal life at several places, the virus has hit economic activity hard. It has sent global stock markets, from Dow Jones to Nikkei and our own Sensex and Nifty, tumbling down. Lakhs of crores of wealth has been wiped out in the last three days as the world is still trying to come to grips with the virus. There was mayhem at Dalal Street where investor wealth worth Rs 5.50 lakh crore was gone in a day today . More than the bear run at Dalal Street it is the likely impact the coronavirus will have on Indian economy which is causing concern. With India being a major importer of Chi- nese electronics component (67 per cent) and consumer durables (45 per cent), be- sides pharma bulk drugs, growth will take a hit. At the same time petro-chemical ex- ports to China have to be put on hold. Credit agency CRISIL has warned that if the virus continues to spread to the first quarter of the new fiscal the economy will suffer a setback, notwithstanding a good farm output. T here are many traditions in the world. But if you can follow any tradition to its source, you will see it is only an outer manifesta- tion or expression of an inner experience of one person or a group of people. When people try to organize and deliver that experience to more peo- ple, it becomes a system, and then becomes a tradition, and tradition sometimes turns into a religion, and some- times into many other things. All these things start with an inner experience before the pro- cess of either disorganized flow or organized conduct. If it is a disorganized flow, generally it gets referred to as a tradition because it is a loose organiza- tion. If it is a more organized expression, it becomes an or- ganized religion. But essen- tially , if you go back, you will see all these things originat- ed in an inner experience of an individual human being or a group of human beings. you the next day, you would not even recognize the story . What- ever is passed on from genera- tion to generation, human minds are given to enormous distortion. This is the nature of the human mind because most people have not done any- thing about their minds. For most people, their mind is not functioning inde- pendent of memory. What type of memory you carry in your mind, accordingly , that kind of contamination hap- pens in your mind with what- ever is given to you. So, in this country , we established a tradi- tion, a science of transmitting with as much purity as possible. This tradition was called Guru- Shishya Paramparya. come to a place where we think everything that hap- pened a thousand years ago is better than what it is to- day. That is not so. Even a thousand years ago, there were people like you and me, there were struggles, there were problems, there was nonsense, there was everything. It is just that people carry the memory of a few people’s glori- ous lives, and they think every- one at that time was like that. No, a few individuals were like that at that time. Even now, there are a few individ- uals like that. It is just that tradition has to come alive in individual experience. Only then that tradition be- comes a living process. Other- wise, it just becomes an imposi- tion, and one generation or the next will drop it. Tradition is valuable only as a means for the present generation of people to experience the same glorious thing that was the origin of the tradition HOW TIME DISTORTS TRADITION Whoever experienced whatev- er – a hundred years ago or a thousand years ago or ten thou- sand years ago – we bow down to them for who they are. But still, whatever someone experi- enced is only an inspirational story for you. Unless you expe- rience it, it is not real. That person’s experience and that person’s life can only be an in- spiration, never really the way . The only way for every hu- man being is that he or she has to experience it. Maybe the guidance offered could lead you in that direction, but in these many years be- fore it reached you, it might have been distorted. For example, if you see something today, and you went and told someone what you saw, in twenty-four hours, if it goes through twenty-five differ- ent people and comes back to TRADITION OF ORAL TRANSMISSION According to the tradition, an- ything that is an inner experi- ence should never be written down, only transmitted orally. No one has any right to even change a syllable in it – it must be transmitted exactly the same way, with no interpreta- tions. Nobody should write any commentaries about it. For thousands of years, we have managed this. When someone experi- enced something, he deliv- ered it to someone who held this above his life, not as a part of his life, or as his pro- fession or hobby. This was more important than his own life. And this person transmitted it to the next gen- eration. Even if he did not expe- rience it, he delivered it in the same format to the next genera- tion. This was a very wonderful system, but those times are gone and distortions have hap- pened today unfortunately . Whatever is passed on from generation to generation, human minds are given to enormous distortion. This is the nature of the human mind because most people have not done anything about their minds IS PRESERVING TRADITION IMPORTANT? All tradition will be demol- ished when it does not work. You cannot enforce something upon a generation if it is not working for them; it does not matter how sacred we think it is. So, the most important point is to travel back in your tradi- tion, see what the source is, and see if you can bring that expe- rience to the people who are sitting here. Then you do not have to tell them, “Please pre- serve the tradition.” They will anyway keep it alive. TRADITION IS NOT IMPORTANT BY ITSELF Tradition is not important by itself. Tradition is valuable only as a means for the present generation of people to experi- ence the same glorious thing that was the origin of the tradi- tion. Unfortunately, we have Why prison literature has a rich tradition A perfect, feedback focused on what the prisoners did well in their writing. Most entries di- rectly related to what American criminologist Greshem Sykes called the “pains of imprisonment” in 1958. This wasn’t sur- prising, and it is hoped writing about pains was healing for the writers. What was more surprising was the number of entries not directly about im- prisonment. February 29 is a date that only rarely graces our lives, but plays an enormously im- portant role: to keep our annual calendar and the passing of the seasons aligned over very long timescales. Despite a bizarre historical origin and a series of urban legends surrounding it, Leap Day exists for scientific, not supersti- tious, reasons. Without a Leap Day, the physics of planet Earth would quickly nce every four years, at least under most cause the seasons to move out-of-phase with our annual calendar, and the equinoxes and solstices would drift around the days, months and seasons. In fact, if we did Leap Day every four years without fail, things wouldn’t line up very well, either. Only if we properly account for our planet’s axial rotation and revolution around the Sun can we keep our calendar correct, and that’s what Leap Day is all about. Earth completing one revolution around the Sun doesn’t add up to a calendar year I plete revolution is defined as when the Earth returns to the same position it occupied in space a full 360° orbit ago. In astronomy, this is what we call a sidereal (sigh- DEER-ee-ul) year, or the amount of time it takes the Earth to return to the same relative position it occupied earlier with respect to the Sun. But a sidereal year is not the same as a calendar (also known as a tropical) year. The Earth rotates on n astronomy, as in mathematics, a com- its axis while it revolves around the Sun, and that axis precesses over time, which means that the Earth is oriented slightly differently with respect to the Sun when it completes one astronomical revolu- tion versus the year prior. The difference between a sidereal and a tropical year is small only about 20 minutes but that means a calendar year, which is what you need to make the seasons line up, is actually 20 minutes shorter than a full revolution around the Sun. There are not really 24 hours in every day Some days are longer than others because Earth orbits the Sun in an ellipse T our rotational motion around our axis and our revolutionary motion around the Sun. Typi- cally, we think about our rotation as lasting 24 hours, which is why a day is 24 hours, and our revolution as requiring 365 days, which is why a year is 365 days long. Only, these effects he Earth’s motion has two basic parts: are inseparable, as both motions are always occurring. If Earth were totally station- ary, remaining in the same position, then a full rotation through all 360° would equate to a day. But that full 360° rotation isn’t a day: it’s slightly less by two met- rics. First, it only takes the Earth 23 hours, 56 minutes and 4 seconds to rotate through 360°. But secondly, because the Earth moves through space in its orbit around the Sun, it has to rotate a little bit extra to position the Sun in the same relative location as it was in the previous day. That extra bit of required motion is what makes days, on aver- age, 24 hours. H earliest sunrise and latest sunset don’t occur on the sum- mer solstice, and why the latest sunrise and earliest sunset don’t line up with the winter solstice? It’s because the Earth orbits the ave you ever wondered why the Sun in an ellipse, which means when the Earth is closest to the Sun (perihelion) it moves at its fastest, and when it’s farthest from the Sun (aphelion), it moves most slowly. Combine that with the fact that perihelion/ aphelion doesn’t line up with either the solstices or equinoxes, and you’ll find that some days have less than 24 hours while others have more. The 24 hour day that we’re used to is just an average of all the days throughout the year, and even at that, they don’t line up perfectly. Ultimate fate of the Earth-Moon system will be wildly different from what we experience today A only will Earth’s rotation slow down, but the Moon will slowly spiral away from the Earth. In a few hundred million (but less than one billion) years, the Moon will be so dis- tant from Earth that there will no longer be any total solar eclipses; they will all be annular instead. Assuming we survive the Sun’s transforma- tion into a red giant and planetary nebula/white dwarf combination, a day on Earth and the Moon’s orbital period will both lengthen until they match: until they both take about 47 of our modern days, number of days in a year Gregorian calendar accounts for Leap Days extraordinarily well T our calendar year with the demands of Earth’s combined motions is brilliant and relatively simple: every year that is divisible by 4 is a leap year, unless it’s also divis- ible by 100 but not 400, in which case it’s not a leap year. This means that 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020, etc., will all be leap years, because they’re all divis- century, it’s only a leap In four million years, Leap Days will be unnecessary he way we make up for the mismatch of wasn’t and 2100 won’t be. All told, the adoption of the Gregorian calendar gives us 365.2425 days in a year, which means we won’t be off by even a single day until more than 3,200 years have gone by, at which time we might want to skip another Leap Day down the road. If we excluded every year that’s divisible by 3200 from having a Leap Day, we wouldn’t be off by a single day until ~700,000 years passed. s the effect of tidal braking continues, not which will occur ~50 billion years in the future. Instead of the same face of the Moon always point- ing towards the spinning Earth, the Moon and Earth will be mutually locked, just as Pluto and Charon are with one another today. We should all appreci- ate the need for Leap Days; without them, the Earth’s seasons, equi- noxes, and solstices would all shift over time, rather than falling on the same date year after year. But, simultaneously, we should also appreciate that the length of a day is not constant, just as the is not constant. As time goes on and the Earth’s rotation continues to slow, we’ll need fewer and fewer days to make up a full calendar year, which will mean we’ll require a constantly changing calendar system. But for now, particularly on the scale of a human lifetime, the Gregorian calendar — where Leap Days occur every 4 years but not on centuries that aren’t also divisible by 400 year intervals — will do just fine. Enjoy your extra day this year however you see fit, and remember that without these Leap Days, our calendar simply wouldn’t add up. T tidal braking will start to become important as the millennia continue to tick by. While right now, we’re only adding a single leap second every 18 months or so to accommodate it, the day continues to lengthen. After another 4 million years go by on Earth, the day will lengthen by another 56 seconds: the exact amount necessary for a tropical year. If humans are still around and keeping calendars at that point, we’ll want to think about further transi- tions, as we’re going to need to begin skipping days (in a reverse-Leap Day scenario) in order to keep our seasons aligned with our calendar. his extraordinar- ily slow effect of ible by 4. But if your year marks the turn-of-the- year if it’s also divisible by 400. The year 2000 was a leap year, but 1900 THE COMBINED EFFECTS OF EARTH’S AXIAL ROTATION, ORBITAL REVOLUTION OVER THE LONG TERM, WE’LL NEED TO CHANGE OUR CALENDAR YET AGAIN I is very close but not quite right. In fact, this is what the old Julian Calendar, which we followed for ~1,600 years, did to account for the years. By the late 1500s, this difference was so apparent (our calendar was off by about 10 too many days), that the calendar needed to be revisd. In Italy, Poland, Spain, and Portugal, the dates October 5 through 14, in 1582, never existed. I the Sun — this calendar would be practically perfect, but only for now. Every time there’s an earthquake, our rotation rate slightly speeds up, but that effect is swamped by the gravitational effects of the Sun and Moon on the Earth, which slow us down. The slow- down effect is known as tidal braking, and clocks in at an average of 14 microseconds per year. f we put a single Leap Day every four years, we’d account for 365.25 days on an annual basis, which f everything were constant — our rotation rate, our axial tilt’s orientation, and our orbital motion around
