Around the NCAA Educational Column NCAA Bylaw 16.8.1 -- Permissible Practice Expenses Aninstitution may provide a student-athlete expenses for practice sessions only if: • Associated with an away-from-home contest, • Conducted at a site located within the member institution's state or, • If outside that state, no more than 100 miles from the institution's campus.

  4. Around the NCAA NCAA Bylaw 16.8.1 Any practice on an extended road trip shall take place either at the competition site or on a direct route between two consecutive competition sites. It is not permissible for an institution to schedule practice sessions at other locations in order to provide entertainment opportunities for team members.

Voluntary Workouts Student-athletes may not participate in any countable athletically related activities outside the playing season during any institutional vacation period and/or summer • Cannot be observed by countable coaches (with limited safety exception – rowing, swimming/diving, track field events) • Strength coaches may be present & conduct voluntary workout • Workouts may be constructed by coaches • No attendance, progress reported to coaching staff • No attendance recorded • Students may keep progress logs • No consequences tied to attendance

Retention of Athletics Apparel & Equipment (Bylaw 16.11.1.6) Apparel:  Student-athletes may retain apparel at the end of intercollegiate participation Equipment:  Student-athletes may not retain equipment but may purchase equipment at the same cost as any other interested individuals •  Shoes:  Although equipment, may be retained if deemed no longer reusable.  July 28, 1994 NCAA Staff Interpretation • All retained equipment must be assigned a value, including equipment obtained by the institution at no cost •  It is impermissible for manufacturers to provide equipment directly to student-athletes • The cost of equipment may be depreciated due to wear and tear •  Student-athletes may purchase used equipment prior to offering it to the general public • The cost of equipment may be included under the permissible limit for senior participation awards Summer Use of Equipment (16.11.1.7) Student-Athletes may retain and use institutional equipment during summer
