Who We Are • Non-profit Organization • Student led Project Suyana unites students from all areas of the undergraduate and graduate colleges who share a deeply rooted interest in medicine and global health care. Students will collaborate throughout the 2006-2007 school year to attain the appropriate financial and medical resources that would assist in the project’s long-term success, while gaining a first hand experience in global health. • Diverse

  3. Why Puno? Statistics • Puno is the Peruvian state most afflicted by maternal and infant mortality rates. • On the outskirts of the capital city of Puno, husbands and women from the community deliver newborns • Infant death rate: 53.1 of every 1000 live births • Maternal death rate: 200 of every 100,000 births -World Health Organization, Peru

  4. Doctor:Patient • In the capital, Lima, Peru there are approximately 12-15 physicians per 10,000 inhabitants. • In Puno, Peru, approximately 4-6 physicians are available per 10,000 inhabitants. Ministry of Health, Puno Peru 2006

Short Term Goals • Project A: Construction of Casa de Estar adjacent to Hospital Regional Manuel Nuñez Burton, Centro de Salud. • Facilitate Public Health Awareness program for local residents. • Conduct various research projects • Shadow and assist physicians in areas of: a. Surgery (abdominal, trauma, urology, thoracic) b. Pediatrics (neonatology) c. Obstetrics and Gynecology d. Emergency and Family Medicine • Project B: Construction and preservation of a local clinic in Paucarcolla

Long Term Goals • Construction of Clinic in Paucarcolla – make it an affiliate branch of the Hospital Central. • Create a hotline through the clinic that would service community members • Create a long standing Public Health Awareness program that will be utilized by local public and social workers in both central Puno and Paucarcolla. • Create a community library as a subset of the local clinic and/or Casa de Estar.
