  2. THE FRENCH AND INDIAN WAR (1754-1763) A. Fought on2 continental fronts:Europe and North America • Called the French and Indian Warin North America • Called the Seven Years War in Europe

  4. The French and English Collide • The “French and Indian War”, the colonial part of the “Seven Years War” that ravaged Europe from 1754 to 1763, was the bloodiest American war in the 1700s. It took more lives than the American Revolution, involved people on three continents, including the Caribbean.

  5. “The Last of the Mohicans”(setting during the French & Indian War) • Mr. Anthis recommends this movie based on the famous American novel written by James Fenimore Cooper. The film captures vivid imagery of the bloodshed of the war as well as the emotion displayed by Indians who longed to protect their land and culture from intruders.

  6. THE FRENCH AND INDIAN WAR (1754-1763) B. Treaty of Paris(1763) ended war (England defeats France) • Great Britain: got Canada and all French land East of Mississippi River • Spain: got all land West of Mississippi River, including Louisiana and New Orleans

  7. THE FRENCH AND INDIAN WAR (1754-1763) C. How did this war affect Texas? • France was no longer a threat in North America. • Marques de Rubi, a Spanish officer who investigated Texas, recommended that Spain close their Texas missions except for those in San Antonio and Goliad (La Bahia).

  8. THE FRENCH AND INDIAN WAR (1754-1763) C. How did this war affect Texas? • In 1773, Baron de Ripperda, the Spanish governor of Texas, closed the East Texas missions and ordered all settlers west to San Antonio • One settler, Gil Ybarbo, was permitted to stay as he established Nacogdoches.

  22. BOUNDARY DISPUTE B/W U.S. AND SPANISH TEXAS OVER LOUISIANA • U.S. claimed boundary was Sabine River and possibly all of Texas B. Spain claimed boundary was the Arroyo Hondo, near the Calcasieu River (east of the Sabine River in Louisiana)

Adams-Onis Treaty(1819) – ended the dispute, set boundary at Sabine River and… • U.S. gets Florida and gives up claim to Texas • Spain gets all land west of the Sabine River (i.e., all of Texas) • Spain allows Americans to settle Texas
