How to find the Theme • First, READ the whole text. • Then, identify the BIG IDEAS. • Then, figure out what the author is trying to TEACH the reader about the big idea. • Finally, put that lesson into a statement of theme (complete sentence)!
Snow White Big Ideas: love, betrayal, revengeStatement of theme? Where the Red Fern Grows Big Ideas: friendship, loyalty, death Statement of theme? Batman Big Ideas: courage, evil/greed, heroism Statement of theme?
Silent Reading • Make sure you have 2-3 BIG IDEAS (one word). I’ll be checking during book checks.
