Ancient Greece • Early settlements can be found as far back as 5000 BC, but most place the Greek civilization around 2000 BC – 30 BC • For over 2000 years Greece was the dominant culture, but by 30 BC they had been conquered by Cleopatra of Egypt and Octavian (Caesar Augustus) of Rome • Empire is located in southern Europe on the Mediterranean Sea in present day Greece and Turkey • Famous Greeks: Socrates, Plato, Homer, Pythagorus, Pericles, Alexander • Famous Greek City States: Athens, Sparta, Macedonia, Corinth, Ephesus, Rhodes, Thrace • Known for their wars, architecture, birth of democracy, views on education and advanced scientific knowledge

Ancient Greece – Alexander and Hellenism • Conquered almost all of Asia, Europe and India • King of Macedonia for 13 years and killed in Babylon in 323 BC • Aristotle was his tutor growing up as a young prince • Most believe he was poisoned by his own men who had grown tired of being away from home to conquer lands • Hellenism is translated from the Greek word for “to speak Greek” or “to spread Greek culture” • It lasted from 323 BC – 31 BC when Egypt and Rome conquer Greece • As Greece gained lands around the globe, conquered lands were allowed to keep their own culture as long as they also adopted all things Greek, language, customs, loyalties, etc…

Ancient Greece – General Info • The Greeks were polytheistic, following the gods Zeus, Athena and all of their children and relatives • Ancient Greece invented Democracy and the Republic • They were a war people that excelled in math and science all while never backing down from a fight • Greek men could not marry or live with their family until their military service was done at age 30 • Historically Athens and Sparta did not get along. • The first Olympics were in 776 BC, Olympians competed naked and were limited to only running events • Modern universities were created in Ancient Greece • Ancient Greeks were in favor of slavery and taking children from their parents at a young age for their education • Greeks were considered the first culture to bathe, the rich did so at least once a day in public
