  2. DELHI FETAL HEART CENTER What is Fetal Echo? Fetal echo is a special test done via ultrasound which requires special training and skills to access the heart of the unborn baby. The screening of the heart abnormality needs to be done during the level || scan. If any doubt arises about the heart structure which cannot be checked dur to baby’s position the it is best the heart is evaluated by the pediatric cardiologist.

Maternal drug exposure and Disease. 5. Family History of Congenital Heart Disease. 6. Increased Maternal Risk for Chromosomal Defects including Downs Syndrome. 7. Other Rare Genetic Diseases with Normal Karyotype.

Congenital Heart Defects are the most common birth defects in children. 2. 1 in 100 children get affected by birth defects of the heart. 3. 1,75,000 children are born each year with heart defects. 4. Majority don’t get detected prior to birth. 5. In developed countries 70% get detected prior to birth.

  5. DELHI FETAL HEART CENTER Do All Patients Require a Fetal Echo? Heart needs to be screened in all patients during the Level || Scan. Under following categories the heart needs evaluation by a Cardiologist: 1. Inability to visualize to satisfaction any area of the heart on Level || 2. Any deviation from the normal on Level || 3. Any non-cardiac abnormality warrants a Fetal Echo. 4. Any maternal disease especially diabetes or higher risk patients need fetal echo.

  6. DELHI FETAL HEART CENTER What is Congenital Heart Disease(CHD) Congenital Heart Disease is a problem with the structure of the heart. It is present at birth. Congenital heart defects are the most common type of birth defect. The defects can involve the walls of the heart, the valves of the heart, and the arteries and veins near the heart. They can disrupt the normal flow of blood through the heart. The blood flow can slow down, go in the wrong direction or to the wrong place, or be blocked completely. .

  9. DELHI FETAL HEART CENTER Does Family History of Congenital Heart Disease Affect New Born Baby? In these 4 conditions congenital heart disease may affect new born baby 1. If the previous child was born with CHD, new baby risk is 1 in 20 to 1 in 100 2. If Mother has CHD, new baby risk is as high as 1 in 5 to 1 in 20 3. If previous two children were born with CHD, new baby risk is 1 in 10 to 1 in 20 4. If father has CHD, new baby risk is 1 in 30

There is enough time for the family and the treating gynecologist to reach a decision prior to the 20th week in the adverse situation that a major heart anomaly is suspected.
