  1. Naturalism By: Pauline Hong & Farahlynn Ou

Naturalism • Literary movement that was branched off of Realism. • Anti-romantic, focused on believable reality rather than overly idealized depictions of life. • Humans have limited control over their own destiny, outside factors such as heredity and social conditions were the inevitable determinants. • Emphasis on the despondent side of life. • Influenced by Darwin’s theory of evolution

  3. Authors • Stephen Crane (1871-1900): An American writer who focused on the human mind, pertaining to fear and social isolation. His works include The Red Badge of Courage and The Open Boat. • Frank Norris (1870-1902): An American novelist and journalist who sought to emphasize morality. Works: Mcteague and The Octopus • Famous quote:“The novel with a purpose brings the tragedies and griefs of others to notice” and “prove[s] that injustice, crime, and inequality do exist.”

  4. Kate Chopin (1850-1904): An American author who based her books on true events that revolved around exposing the struggles of women in southern society. • Her works include: • The Awakening • Desiree’s Baby • The Story of an Hour • The Storm
