LANSCE Winter School on Neutron ScatteringPI’s: H. Nakotte & J. Urquidi (NMSU-Physics); J. Rhyne (LANL-LANSCE)NSF Award No.: DMR-0444225 The 2nd LANSCE Winter School on Neutron Scattering was held at Los Alamos Neutron Science Scattering Center (LANSCE) from March 3- 11, 2005. The focus of this school was on Structural Applications of Neutron Scattering. Of the more than 60 applicants, 30 students were selected to spend 9 intensive days in Los Alamos. The students came from 18 U.S. states and 2 overseas institutions. Of the participants, 7 were female and 3 hispanic. This grant paid for travel and lodging of the participants. The school consisted of lectures from world experts and hands-on experiments on topics of engineering materials, modeling theory, and neutron diffraction. ‘Hands-on’ experiments, analysis and modeling of neutron scattering data As part of the school, students were provided with ‘hands-on’ opportunities to learn how to perform neutron experiments and how to analyze the data. The students performed 4 projects (involving the NPDF, SMARTS, HIPPO and LQD spectrometers) to learn about crystallographic texture, residual-strains, short-range correlations, and microstructure. The analysis of the experimental data included Rietveld refinement of neutron-diffraction data, Visco-Plastic Self-Consistent Modeling (VPSCM), and Finite-Element Modeling (FEM). Students at the 2nd LANSCE Winter School on Neutron Scattering engaged in analyzing results from a residual stress experiment on SMARTS with help from instrument scientist Bjorn Clausen.
