  1. Monday Reflection “You can get through life with bad manners, but it's easier with good manners.”

  2. Who said it? • Lillian Gish was an American actress. • Gish's father left the family before she was old enough to remember him. • Her mother then took up work at a theatre, including acting roles, to support the family. • Their mother later moved the family to Illinois and opened the Majestic Candy Kitchen - the girls helped sell popcorn and candy to the theatre goers next door. • After the theatre burnt down they moved again to New York. A neighbour working in theatre and film gave Lillian and her sister Dorothy their first opportunity to become actresses. • They later travelled around the country with touring theatre companies. Again, they would have to meet new people and make new friends. • Lillian became a famous film star in the 1920s and later became a top TV star. Her distinctive looks also provided modelling work. • She never married and maintained a very close relationship with her sister.

  3. Your response… • Why might Lillian Gish be someone we can look up to? • How did Lillian Gish get noticed? Was it all due to looks and acting talent? • Does good manners mean not saying what you think? Taking it further: Create a courtesy guide, research different politeness rules around the world
