Core Questionnaire Concept • Basic DHS strategy • Comparability of data across countries • Reflect current USAID data needs in each round • Work with countries to ensure country data needs are represented • Use the strengths of DHS to inform additions: • Nationally representative survey • Strong training and supervision component

  3. Frequently Added Options • Addition of biomarkers: • HIV • Syphilis • Vitamin A • Measles • Hepatitis B • Herpes • Lipids • Chlamydia • Gonorrhea • Bacterial vaginosis • Trichomonas • Lead • Tetanus • Diabetes • Blood pressure

  4. Frequently Added Options (cont’d) • Addition of modules • Domestic violence • Female genital cutting • Maternal mortality • Birth registration • Women’s status • Others (health expenditures, child labor, verbal autopsy)

Scope For New Directions • Asking questions on new topics • Questionnaires are already too long • New additions need to go hand-in-hand with reductions • Questionnaire will always be in flux • More frequent use of biomarkers • Through dried blood spots? • Through venous blood draw? • Through collection of other specimens • Urine • Vaginal swabs • Sputum

  6. Scope For New Directions (Cont’d) • Through other measurements • Blood pressure • Additional anthropometry (upper arm circumference, waist-to-hip-ratio) • Grip strength • Pulmonary performance • Dental health • Creating more continuous surveys • Expanding use of technology; PDA’s, GPS

Scope For New Directions (Cont’d) • Emphasize those activities that can build on the basic strength of the DHS • Great sampling procedures • Covers all households • Gets a complete listing of all household members • Best example is the inclusion of HIV testing in DHS surveys • Adult health could be a logical addition
