  2. Definition and History The Lymphatic System • Hodgkin’s Disease is a neoplastic disorder originating in the lymphatic system/lymph nodes. It is usually defined by the presence of Reed-Sternberg cells. • Thomas Hodgkin discovered this disease in 1832 and has since been known as Hodgkin’s Disease. http://miyessence.files.wordpress.com/2006/12/lymphatic.gif

  4. Effects / Symptoms Symptoms include • Painless swelling of lymph nodes • Fever/chills • Night sweats • Weight loss • Itching • Occurs more often in adolescents and people over the age of 55 http://www.healthoma.com/images/posts/hodgkins-disease-pictures.jpg

  5. Stage 1 • Only a single lymph node region is involved Stage 2 • Lesions are on one side of the diaphragm Stage 3 • Both sides are involved Stage 4 • Widespread involvement of the lymph node sites The Stages of Hodgkin's Disease

Future Outlook/ Research • Henry Kaplan and Saul Rosenberg first used radiation to treat Hodgkin’s disease in the 1960s • Lymphoma and Hodgkin’s Disease Research Program continues this legacy through investigations into immune system cancer and its molecular and genetic origins • Since then they have Introduced a number of important advances, including the first FDA-approved monoclonal antibody for cancer treatment (Rituxan)

Statistics / Other Information • Survival rate for patients with Hodgkin's disease has increased from 40% in whites from 1960-1963 to more than 86% for all races in 1996-2003 • Estimated 71,380 people in the US were diagnosed with lymphoma in 2007 ( 8,190 cases were Hodgkin’s and the rest Lymphoma) • Among the new cases of Hodgkin’s Disease 4,470 were males and 3,720 were female • 3rd most common cause of cancer in children • In 2005 10%-15% of cases were found in cilderin under the age of 16
