  1. Pronoms Accentués Stressed Pronouns

  2. Pronouns • First of all, let’s take a look at words in French. • There are two kinds of words. Le words and La words. • The La words can be replaced by “elle” • The Le words can be replaced by “il”

  3. Pronouns • Les words • Les words are more than one “le” word or “la” word • Le pupitre+ another le pupitre= les pupitres • La chaise + another la chaise = les chaises • Notice when there’s only one, its still a le or la word. Be sure you know which one is a le word when there’s only one and which one is a la word when there’s only one.

  4. Les Words • Les words can be replaced by ‘ils’ or ‘elles’ • Ils is if the word is originally a le word • Elles is if the word is originally a la word

  5. What If You have a Le word and a la word together?? • Le pupitre+ la porte would be replaced by “ils” • Le garcon + la fille would be replaced by “ils”

  6. A few more • If you are talking about yourself or if you see a “moi,” replace it with “je” • If you are talking about you and someone else (we) or if you see an “et moi,” You are going to use “nous” • If you are talking about someone else and the person you are talking about “you guys,” you use “vous” • A second way to see “we “ is “on”

  7. Now that we know how to replace words • What happens if it is at the end of the sentence? • Richard and I • Monique and you • Jérome and us • Dominique and you guys • Marc, Mélissa, and them

  8. JE • In english, you notice that the first sentence is not « Richard and me. » • We change it to « Richard and I » • The same thing happens in French. • In stead of « Richard et Je  » - THIS DOES NOT WORK IN FRENCH • It becomes « Richard et MOI »

  9. Tu • In english, you do not say « Richard and you, » but « you and Richard. » If you say it the other way, it sounds wrong. • In French, we do not say « Richard et tu. » NEVER SAY THIS TO A FRENCH PERSON • We say « Richard et toi » • Tu becomes toi

  10. IL/ELLE • In english, we do not say « Richard and he » or « Richard and she » • We say « Richard and him » or « Richard and her » • In French, we do the same. If Il/ elle is not followed by a verb (at this point, we will only be dealing with etre), it becomes LUI • Richard and lui (Richard and him)

  11. Nous stays the same • Vous stays the same

  12. Ils/ Elles • In english, we do not say « I and they » • It is « I and them » • In French, we use eux instead of ils or elles • « Je et eux »

  13. Write these out • Richard and I • Joe and you • They(le) and him • You (pl) and her • Me and they (le) • You and they (la)

  14. How do you use this

  15. Stressed Pronouns can be used when • You want to emphasize something • I, I want ice cream • Moi, Je veux de la glace • If you’re talking about something after these words: sous, sur, dans, devant, derrière, et, à coté de, près de (near), loin de (far from), à (at/to), and de (from).
