  2. Introduction Driving is typically our # 1 project hazard. Currently # 1 cause of death in the US Oil and Gas Industry. Single largest cause of fatalities in OGP member company operations. Recent third party fatality from vehicle accident in a DLS project area highlighted importance of vehicle safety both to DLS and our contractors. Environments such as the Cooper Basin exacerbate effects of vehicle accidents though factors such as extreme heat, lack of immediate medical support and lengthy evacuation time frames So what is excellence? Industry Guidance and Best Practice DLS defines vehicle safety excellence as ‘zero vehicle incidents’ APPEA Vehicle Safety Guidelines – provide recommendations on areas such as journey management, vehicle standards, driver behaviour & competence; vehicle loading and load restraint OGP Land Transport Safety Recommended Practices – provide recommendations on: • Seatbelts • Driver training and qualification • IVMS • Communications • JMP’s • Driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs, narcotics, medications • Driver fitness and alertness • Vehicle specs • Management systems Are these adequate for land seismic?   4. Current Issues for Drillsearch Driver training – does our current course/provider effectively meet our requirements? Contractor Management – should mode 3 contractors meet operator’s vehicle safety standards? Behavioural issues associated with young drivers. How to best address Fatigue Management – are we managing in the most effective manner? What equipment (not currently recommended by APPEA) should be mandatory for all remote vehicle travel? • ROPS • Personal Locator Beacons • 2nd spare wheel • Jacking plates and chocks • Tyre compressors to adjust tyre pressure for driving conditions • Spare drinking water – 5L per person per day plus 3 day reserve • Fire blankets • Minimum vehicle clearance Recovery equipment – Are people being trained adequately and should snatch straps be allowed? Working or travelling alone policy in remote locations. Should we allow this? Only use vehicles that achieve a 5 star safety rating? Future Industry Trends Increased requirement to travel in remote/restricted terrain environments due to resource scarcity Increased demand for energy will result in increasing numbers of new/inexperienced employees and contractors operating vehicles Compulsory use of 5 star NCAP compliant vehicles? Use of UAV’s instead of lights vehicles or ATV’s for geophysical survey, in particular geomagnetic. Other applications may include scouting, monitoring and SAR What else?
