  2. Recent Outbreak • Cantaloupe contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes • Grown in Colorado by Jensen Farms • Recent Recall • 3rd most deadly food-borne pathogen since 1970s

  3. Recent Outbreak • Began in late July 2011 • Most of 60 years or older • Tendency to affect those with a weakened immune system • Toll at 13 deaths and 72 who have fallen ill • 4 in New Mexico • 2 in Colorado and Texas • 1 in Kansas, Maryland, Missouri, Nebraska, and Oklahoma

  4. About Listeria • Strain of Gram-positive bacterium • Causes severe illness to those with weak immune systems • Worst cases attack muscle or spinal cord • Can lead to meningitis • Common symptom is diarrhea • Others include fever, nausea, and vomiting • Causes miscarriages in pregnant women

About Listeria (cont’d) • Commonly found in soil, water, decaying plant matter and water • Few have been associated with fruit and vegetables • Most associated with spoiled meat and dairy products • Can take more than 2 months for an individual to fall ill after infected • Grows well at low temperatures

  6. Other Outbreaks • Deadliest outbreak in United States in 1985 • Listeria monocytogenes illness linked with Mexican-style cheese • Suspected 84 deaths at the time • Federal database only concluded 52

  7. Other Outbreaks (cont’d) • Second deadliest strain in U.S. in 1998-99 • 21 Deaths and 4 Miscarriages • Listeria outbreak linked with hot dogs and other meats

  8. Other Outbreaks (cont’d) • 2008 strain associated with salmonella • Found in peanuts and peanut butter • Killed 9 people and more than 700 fell ill

  9. Prevention? • With current strain the F.D.A. suggests… • Run under water • Scrub with produce brush • Dry with clean cloth/clean paper towel • Unsure how contamination occurred • Does not transmit through contact, only consumption of contaminated food • Use of antibiotics once diagnosed
