  2. Summary • Preparing for beam • Most installations for this shutdown are complete: • RFQ • Linac Vacuum / Motor Control Center • Booster Absorber • Booster Solid State • Booster Vacuum & Water • Much work to go: • Linac & Booster RF systems • Loss minimization

  3. New RFQ Installed

  4. RFQ Status • RFQ is Installed and commissioned • November 23 • 33 mA into Linac Tank 1 – goal is 40 • Used for treating patients since Dec. 11 • 28 mA at Tank 3 • Transverse emittances are 2x smaller than previously with Cockcroft-Waltons • Tuning is ongoing • Possibility of beam exiting RFQ at large angle leading to losses • Correctors will be added

Linac Status • Linac vacuum and Motor Control Center upgrades performed over shutdown • 66 MeV beam has been delivered for NTF patient treatment • 400 MeV start up initiated the week of December 17 • First beam to the dump Dec.18th • Commissioning continues • Efficiency still lower than expected at high energies (~ 10% lower): • Ongoing problems with LRF5 which has been running at 7% lower gradient. Significant impact on poor efficiency and high losses observed. • Phase matching is not totally optimized yet. It will help when HEP beam resumes by the end of this month • Problems with instrumentation (unprecedented behavior of the HE motor controller of the wire scanners). Wires are unidirectional. They seem not to be retrieving to the opposite position once inserted. Investigation will resume afterthe holiday break. • Nevertheless, beam was observed at the dump area. More work to cleaning accelerate and dump the beam to the absorber continues.

  6. Booster Solid State Upgrade • Will be completed during shutdown • Major benefits to reliability and the cost of operation To Be Done Nearly Done Prototype Upgraded

  7. Booster RF Cavity Refurbishment • RF cavity and tuner refurbishment is proceeding and will continue while running • 4/19 Cavities refurbished To Be Done Removed Being Refurb. Refurbished

  8. Booster RF Cavity Modeling Refurbished Solid State Cavity Tuner Rebuild Spare Cavity Repaired Tuner Connection Ferrite Testing Failed Tuner Connection

  9. Booster Upgrades • Major LCW replumbing and vacuum work also completed • New notcher and absorber installed • Will create cleaner notches in the beam, and direct the notched beam into a controlled dump location

  10. Booster Startup • Booster work is wrapping up this week • Startup will occur towards the end of next week • New notch absorber and RF will be commissioned • Aperture alignment and potential magnet moves will occur • Beam studies for optics and cogging will continue • Will wait for MI & RR for high-throughput startup • In the meantime, we will test cavities for high-pulse rate

Long-Term Items • Linac RF Systems Modernization • High cost of upkeep • High-risk for failure in both modulator and power amplifier • Have developed an alternative klystron amplifier that solves both the above problems • Ready to build a prototype! – addressing finance issues • Booster RF Cavities • Need to be refurbished to operate at higher rates • Have now refurbished four cavities ( /19) to operate at 15 Hz • Yet to be proven with beam • As of a year ago, it was unclear whether cavities could ever run at 15 Hz • Need at least three additional, new stations for RF control to limit losses • Provides a consistent accelerating voltage • More cavities may be needed, depending on results of refurbishment • New cavities offer the possible of reduced losses and improved performance • Refurbishing continues and design work is underway for additional cavities.

Summary • Proton Source ready for startup • Numerous PIP upgrades during the shutdown • There was additional non-PIP work (not covered here) • Should experience immediate operational improvements from: • RFQ • Linac and Booster utilities • Solid-state upgrade • Notch Absorber • Four refurbished cavities • Work will continue • RF systems are the major focus • Several activities to decrease losses / increase intensity • More utility / reliability work is pending
