  • Academic documents and advising

Coordinating: who’s doing what in what department?

  • Politics play a part in who does what
  • Upper administrators vs. business staff vs. academic staff – the word might not have gotten around
  • Roles inside departments may be off of the norm/suggested UTeach replication path

The Business Office of College of Natural Sciences and Math (NSM) is Decentralized; College of Education is Centralized; Department of Mathematics took the helm.

  • Math Department takes care of all business tasks
  • teachHOUSTON coordinates the tasks to forward to Math

The KU Center for Science Education, a department in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS):

  • manages multiple STEM education projects with UKanTeach being the focal project
  • has offices in the School of Education (SoE) and CLAS
  • Interfaces with CLAS, the SoE, the KU Center for Research, and the KU Endowment Association to address program support

NSM advising is Centralized; Education advising is Decentralized; and advising documents are facilitated by teachHOUSTON.

  • teachHOUSTON coordinates all of the academic documents and liaisons with the two advising areas
  • Education and NSM advise their areas

CLAS advising is centralized and decentralized; SoE advising is centralized.

  • UKanTeach staff provide academic advising to future and current students
  • CLAS and SoE advisors handle the specific advising for the UKanTeach students STEM major.
  • UKanTeach staff coordinate with the CLAS departments and the SoE to ensure that all major and program requirements met

  • Due to lack of manpower, Master Teachers duties have been expanded.

Stakeholders: who can you rely on to ensure the viability of the program?

  • Identifying stakeholders
        • Deans and Chairmen over STEM areas, Co-Directors, Education Dean and Chairmen, Academic Affairs Administration interested in teaching
        • School Districts and Graduates of the program
        • Anyone who supported the program via actions or funding
  • Build relationships and utilize them when roadblocks are hit.

Garnering Access and Pitching to a Captivated Audience

  • What is in it for the people you are pitching to: hit the highlights for them.
  • Identify and pitch to the decision makers.
  • Have established partners to introduce you to provide legitimacy.

    • Identifying Stakeholders—multiple levels of stakeholders
    • Building relationships—start with the people closest to you, and move up.
    • Build with all levels: advising, faculty, business staff, upper administration, development, corporations

    • To Students: critical need for teachers in STEM areas (salary, job security), reward of improving community, maintain flexibility to go to industry, try it out for free, get your degree and certification in four years, funding available for teaching in STEM fields.
    • To Campus Admin: enrollment increase, national competitiveness and recognition, and community outreach
    • To Corporations: great teachers make people interested in going into their field; community service
    • To School Districts: meeting critical need for quality and quantity of STEM teachers.
